With $54 million in school bonds on the line in Corsicana ISD in the Saturday, May 11 eleciton, only 770 people cast ballots in early voting that ended on Tuesday. About 15,000 people are eligible to vote in CISD elections.

Low voter turn out is normal, according to Election Administrator Danda Parker.

“It’s typical with any city and school election, period,” Parker said.

The last “big” local election was the Corsicana mayoral election, and only 2,000 people voted then, Parker said.

This election, even with so many millions at stake, may attract even fewer, she said.

“On Saturday there’s just so much going on,” she said. “We’ve got the Airsho, the bike race, Navarro College graduation, there’s a lot of things going on that day. It’s hard for people to remember to do it.”

The CISD bond package proposes spending $3.7 million in safety and security upgrades; $36 million for a new middle school campus, $4 million in library/media center improvements, $1.5 million in upgrades to the high school’s baseball complex, $7.4 million in upgrades to several campuses, and $1.3 million for a new administration building.

Several school districts and three municipalities in Navarro County are holding elections on Saturday as well.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday. Voters needing help with polling locations on election day can call the voter office at 903-875-3330.

Caleb Curl, 13, of Frost FFA, won grand champion of the commercial heifer show, the first leg of the commercial heifer overall prizes. Unlike a lot of the other animal categories, commercial heifers aren't show-things with smooth coats and stardust on their hooves. They're straight out of the pasture, a bit muddy and certainly not the lady-like, pampered creatures that will be led around the ring in the registered heifer show.

It’s the big musical, the one that makes me think of ‘cast of thousands,’ or in our case, dozens at least, and it’s here only for a few short days. ‘Annie Get Your Gun,’ is Irving Berlin’s candy box treasure of a play about Annie Oakley, the sharpshooter in love with a showman.
It’s presented by the Warehouse Living Arts Center but because of its size is on stage at the Palace Theatre. Shows will be at 7:30 p.m. tonight, Friday and Saturday, with a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee.
