Police: Child’s death ‘tragic accident’

2-year-old dies from gunshot

Corsicana — Corsicana Police Chief Randy Bratton said Thursday there is no indication that the shooting death of 2-year-old Kinsler Davis was anything but a “tragic accident.”

Davis died late Wednesday from what is being described as an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Corsicana EMS personnel were called to the home at 8:46 p.m. Wednesday, after the child’s father called 9-1-1 and reported his son had shot himself.

Bratton said the child apparently found a handgun hidden in a bedroom at his father’s house on North 30th Street. The gun accidentally discharged, striking the child in the head.

Davis was taken by air ambulance to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, where he died, according to information from the Dallas Medical Examiner’s office.

Bratton told reporters Thursday the child’s father was in a walk-in closet in the bedroom of the home when the accidental shooting occurred. Bratton did not release the name of the child’s father.

“All the information indicates this was a tragic accident,” Bratton said. “The father said he believed he had the hand gun concealed in the bedroom.” The gun did not have a lock on it, Bratton said.

News of the tragedy spread quickly Wednesday night through friends and social media outlets, prompting an outpouring of prayers for the family, the child, and the first responders called to work the tragedy.

Kinsler’s parents — father Chris Davis and mother Selena Barham — both reached out to supporters on their Facebook pages Thursday, appreciative of the messages of love and support in the wake of the tragedy.

“This is an incredibly hard time for us and our families but we appreciate all the encouraging words and prayers,” Barham posted. “Kinsler was our world. That little boy is what brought us happiness. Please just continue to pray for peace.”

Chris Davis wrote “Our hearts are gone. We want to thank each and every one of you for the support, words, and prayers. We may not know all of you, but know this...you all are like family to us and we appreciate each and every one of you.”

A fund to help the family of Kinsler Davis with medical and funeral expenses has been established at all branches of Community National Bank and Trust of Texas, said Linda Timmerman of Texas Dermatology Associates. Donations may also be made at the Texas Dermatology Associates Corsicana office.

In light of the tragedy, Bratton encouraged those who have guns in their home to take precautions to prevent accidents such as the one that happened Wednesday.

“The message is even if you think you have the firearm hidden, hidden is not good enough,” he said. Bratton said the use of a child-proof lock or a secured holster can help prevent accidental discharge of weapons. He said the Corsicana Police Department has gun locks available free of charge to the public.

Bratton said his department’s investigation into the tragedy will be submitted to the Navarro County District Attorney’s office to determine if any charges will be filed, or if a grand jury will hear the case.

Caleb Curl, 13, of Frost FFA, won grand champion of the commercial heifer show, the first leg of the commercial heifer overall prizes. Unlike a lot of the other animal categories, commercial heifers aren't show-things with smooth coats and stardust on their hooves. They're straight out of the pasture, a bit muddy and certainly not the lady-like, pampered creatures that will be led around the ring in the registered heifer show.
