Cook Center hosting Artists of the American West Inaugural Show and Sale

National show returns to Pearce Museum

Corsicana — The Pearce Museum in Corsicana is pleased to host the Artists of the American West Inaugural Show and Sale opening to the public on Saturday, March 9.

At its core, the Artists of the American West consists of eight founding artists who have made it their goal to “preserve Western traditions through fine art.” These artists, T.W. Vanya, Don Weller, June Dudley, J.W.  Segler, Carla D’aguanno, Steve Atkinson, Tim Harmon, and Mary Ross Buchholz, hold fast to the ideas of the romance of the West. Through art making and mentoring, these eight sustain America’s idealistic western heritage and the “values that helped establish this great country.”

The organization offers an associate membership with an annual juried show at another venue, and has invited 18 special guest artists to this show and sale.

Art patrons and the general public can expect to see traditional Western Art, including landscapes, people, events, and animals. From the Native Americans of the Great Plains to today’s working cowgirls and cowboys, AAW hopes to tell the ongoing story of the American West through fine art. Each founding artist will display up to six new, never-before-seen works, including one miniature.

Rounding out this year’s exciting group are the guest artists: Roger Archibald, Phil Beck, Teal Blake, Steve Devenyns, Mikel Donahue, Dennis Farris, Jenny Forge-Schmalstieg, Russell Houston, Joe Kronenberg, Steven Lang, Cindy Long, Brenda Murphy, Don Oelze, Pedro Ramos, Gladys Roldan-de-Moras, D. Michael Thomas, Michael Trcic, and Dennis Ziemienski. A good many of these artists are from Texas, and five are represented in the Pearce Museum’s permanent collection.

The Artists of the American West Inaugural Show and Sale will give the general public a much-anticipated look at what these artists have to offer the greater Western Art community.  The Pearce Museum is delighted to host AAWs first show and sale at the Pearce Museum. This collaboration will benefit not just the museum and the Artists of the American West, but also collectors of traditional Western Art, many of whom will no longer have to go out of state to purchase high-quality art. For others, it’s a chance to visit the great state of Texas.

The AAW Inaugural Show and Sale opens to the public March 9. The opening will kick off with a dinner and awards ceremony honoring an artist voted for the Artists’ Choice Award presented by Joyce and Roland Jones. Promptly following dinner, the show will open to the public and the sale will begin.

The works of art are kept under lock and key until the sale begins, and will not be available for sale until the doors to the gallery open at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $45 per person and include free admission to the Pearce Museum all day March 9, as well as dinner and entry to the sale.

To claim your spot for this stunning event, call Museum Director, Holly B. Wait, at (903) 875-7438.

Caleb Curl, 13, of Frost FFA, won grand champion of the commercial heifer show, the first leg of the commercial heifer overall prizes. Unlike a lot of the other animal categories, commercial heifers aren't show-things with smooth coats and stardust on their hooves. They're straight out of the pasture, a bit muddy and certainly not the lady-like, pampered creatures that will be led around the ring in the registered heifer show.

It’s presented by the Warehouse Living Arts Center but because of its size is on stage at the Palace Theatre. Shows will be at 7:30 p.m. tonight, Friday and Saturday, with a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee.
