Early voting ends Friday

Corsicana — Friday at 5 p.m. is the last chance to cast an early vote in the November election for U.S. senator, U.S. representative to the House, state supreme court justice, sheriff, county commissioner, and oh yeah, president of the United States.

Election day is Tuesday nation-wide.

The advantages of early voting are that it’s done at the Navarro County Courthouse in the basement, so people don’t need to worry about what precinct they’re in, or if their polling location changed, and there are typically fewer lines.

As of Thursday, about 6,700 Navarro County voters had cast early ballots, putting the county on target to match what it did in 2008, according to Elections Administrator Danda Parker.

In 2008, more than 8,000 people cast early votes in November.

“We’re right there at it,” Parker said.

Because the federal courts have thrown out Texas’ controversial voter ID law, people only have to take their voter registration card to cast their votes.

“If they don’t have their voter card, they can take their drivers license or some kind of identification for them to be able to vote,” Parker said. “A passport, a state ID, a birth certificate, something like that.”
