The carcasses of two Holstein cows were found dumped at an old gas station in Angus Wednesday morning, according to Sheriff Elmer Tanner.
“It appears they were dumped last night,” he said.
Evidence found on the animals include ear tags from a sale barn, and the investigators are tracking the animals through the Texas Southwestern Cattlemen’s Association.
“We’re looking at filing on felony illegal dumping and possibly cruelty to animals,” Tanner said.
One scenario that investigators are looking at is that the cows were being hauled in a trailer or truck and fell before being stomped to death by the other cows, and the driver simply dumped their bodies rather than continue to carry them.
Tanner said he wasn’t aware of any similar cases happening in Navarro County in recent history.
The animals were dropped off at the former Mike’s Exxon in Angus. Anyone with information about the case is urged to call the Navarro County Sheriff’s Office.
