Gary D. Brown, 72, passed away Sunday, June 14, 2009, at his home in Corsicana.
Visitation will held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, at Corley Funeral Home. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, June 18, at First Baptist Church with Dr. David Edwards and the Rev. B.F. Risinger Jr. officiating. Interment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery.
Gary was born Jan. 5, 1937, in a prairie farmhouse in the same room where his mother was born, located in Kay County, Okla. He married Nancy Lee Wills on Aug. 27, 1961, in Hazen, Ark. His 30-plus year banking career began with First National Bank in Dallas and continued in Corsicana with First National Bank and Corsicana National Bank & Trust. He earned his B.S.B.A. and M.B.A. degrees from the University of Arkansas located in Fayetteville and he was a graduate of the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at SMU. He was a graduate of Acorn High School, located near Mena, Ark. He served in the U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne Division, Fayetteville, N.C., where he earned his parachutist wings and also served in Puerto Rico.
Gary taught a Sunday school class and served as a deacon and member of several committees at First Baptist Church, Corsicana. Additionally, he served on numerous civic boards including: Corsicana Independent School District, Corsicana Development Commission, Corsicana Health Support Foundation, Corsicana’s Palace Theatre, Corsicana Area Chamber Foundation, Corsicana Education Foundation, Corsicana Industrial Foundation, Corsicana Main Street, Corsicana Area Chamber of Commerce, Navarro County Red Cross, Navarro County MHMR, Navarro College Master Action Plan, Navarro Council of the Arts, Rena Fleming Foundation, The Salvation Army, Twilight Home, and Warehouse Living Arts Center.
Also, at the time of his death, Gary was a member of the board of directors of Community National Bank & Trust.
Gary was preceded in death by his father, Fred E. “Bud” Brown; mother, Neva L. Brown; and by a grandson, Daniel Pawlowski.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy W. Brown; children, Deanna Brown and Jennifer Johnson and her husband David; and four grandchildren, Kate and Lily Pawlowski and Neva and Jack Johnson, all of Corsicana. Also surviving are his sister and brother-in-law, Kay and Hurley Moseley of Carrollton; and nieces, Sheri Moseley and Marianne Golden.
Honorary pallbearers will be Warren Awalt, Bob Bray, Mike Harwood, Ernest Kauffman, Don Lake, Les Leskoven, Scott Middleton, Jim Page, Jack Smith, Zane Stites, Don Tekell, and K.C. Wyatt. Other honorary pallbearers will be men of the Gary Brown Bible Class and deacons of First Baptist Church, and directors of Community National Bank & Trust.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or First Baptist Church Building Fund.
