Carl M. Hagle

Col. (retired) Carl M. Hagle, 88, passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2009. Carl was born in Dawson on March 17, 1921, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Mack Hagle. He attended Corsicana High School, where he then married his longtime childhood sweetheart, Joyce Evelyn Parker. Carl and Joyce were married for over 67 years. In September 1940, he entered the Army Air Corps and became an aviation cadet in November 1942. In June 1943, he completed Advanced Pilot Training School at Turner Air Force Base, Georgia, where he received his wings and was commissioned a second lieutenant. Carl served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He flew 38 combat missions and logged over 100,000 flying hours in the military. Carl retired as base commander of McConnell AFB, Wichita, Kan., in 1971. He returned to San Antonio for the next 38 years. Carl Hagle was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Alzafar Shrine for over 50 years, a member of the Golf Unit for 47 years, and a member of the San Antonio Daedalians. He was also a member of the Coker United Methodist Church. Carl was an avid golfer and loved to fish.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Juanita Hagins and Gladys Smalling; and his son, Lt. Col. (retired) Donald H. Hagle.
Carl is survived by his wife, Joyce; sons, Roy David Hagle and Michael K. Hagle; daughter, Holly D. Hagle; daughter-in-law, Lynette Hagle; grandchildren, Kerri and her husband Dane Bear, Kasey Hagle and Geoffrey Hagle, and their mother, Merri Hagle; and great-grandson, Gavin Lawrence Bear.
Services are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 23, at Porter Loring North Chapel with Pastor Barbara R. Galloway officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
The family has asked in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Donald Hagle Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of Grapeland Methodist Church, P.O. Box 457, Grapeland, TX 75844; and Shriners Hospital for Children, 901 N. Loop 1604 W, San Antonio, TX 78232.
