— James Claudie Allsup, 93, of Mexia, began his eternal rest on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at 10 a.m. at Porter Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Rineker and the Rev. Chris Nickleberry officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Pt. Enterprise Cemetery. Family visitation will be held on Friday evening from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Allsup was born on Sept. 10, 1919 in Payne Springs, Texas to Henry V. and Mary Granthom Allsup. He enlisted in the Army in 1944 and was among the third wave in the storming of Utah Beach in the Invasion of Normandy in June, 1944. He was wounded on July 4, 1944. He was honorably discharged in 1945 with rank of Sargent with a purple heart.  On Feb. 19, 1946, he married Etta Fae May and had two children. He joined the Masonic Lodge in Eureka in 1948 and was honored for his 50 years of service to the Masons in 1998. He worked for many years at Brown Oil and Gas and retired in 1990. He was currently a member of the First Pentecostal Church of God, where he served on the Deacon board.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his son, James Claude Allsup; siblings, Ludie Mae Hanna, A.D. Allsup and Faye Minatra, as well as a person very special to him, Tommy Pickett.

Survivors include his daughter, Cathy Samford and husband, Jerry of Mexia; granddaughter, Michelle Parks and husband, Chris of Mexia; grandson, Sam Samford and wife, Tasha of Pinehurst, Texas; three great-granddaughters, Rebekah Parks, Jadyn Samford and Rylee Samford, as well as some very special people in his life, Darrell and Felicia Pickett of Teague, Kathy Pickett of Teague and Bruce Pickett of Mexia.

Serving as pallbearers are Rick Williamson, Jim Bob Cobb, Chris Parks and Josh Ingram.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Teague Nursing Home and Virginia’s Hospice for the loving care they provided Claudie during his final days.  Also, a very special thank you to Charlene Robinson, Shelly Stewart and Doris Manning for the extra special care provided to him.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Virginia’s Hospice or Toys for Tots of Limestone, Freestone or Leon County.
