Jimmie Ray Cogdell

Corsicana — Born Feb. 17, 1924 in Denton to John William and Eskel Delilah Elrod Cogdell, Jimmie Ray Cogdell passed away quietly in his sleep on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, just six days shy of his 90th birthday.

 Following in his father’s footsteps, he began in the trade of roofing before enlisting in the Army on March 5, 1943 at Fort Sam Houston.  A World War II veteran, Jimmie proudly served his country in the 37th Infantry Division as a radio operator, marksman and grade 4 technician in the Northern Solomons Campaign in Luzon, Philippines. A recipient of the Purple Heart, he also received two Bronze Stars and a Bronze Arrowhead in the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a Bronze Star, four Overseas Service Bars with a Bronze Star, A Good Conduct Medal and Victory Ribbon. After his discharge from the Army, he spent several years in roofing, as well as the insurance business. A devoted Mason for 62 years, he was also a member of the Park Place Lodge #1172 in Houston.

 An avid fisherman, Jimmie loved spending time on the coast at his lake home on Demi John Island in Freeport.  He also loved spending time with his family and friends at his home in Streetman, near Lake Richland Chambers.

 Jimmy is survived by his loving wife, Oletha Oden Cogdell of the home; stepchildren, Michael Hawkins and wife, Lynette, Jimmy Hawkins, Jerry Hawkins and wife, Suzanne all of Denison and Marla Morris and husband, Mike of Sherman; nephews, Mickey and Richard Eastman, Mark and Rusty Ristivo; nieces, Sherry Eastman Chasteen and Carol Ristivo; and nine grandchildren.

 He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Mary Cogdell Eastman and Johnnie Cogdell.

 A Masonic service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014 at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home in Mexia.  

A Military service and interment will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14, 2014 at South Park Cemetery in Pearland.

 Pallbearers will be grandsons, Jeremy Morris, Jayton and Weston Hawkins and good friends, Donnie Middleton, Eddie Compton and Kenneth League.  Honorary pallbearers will be nephew Mickey Eastman and good friends, Bill Massey and Steve Hoyt.
