—      Leo G. Hickman,  85, passed away Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014 in Childress.

     Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014 in Childress Church of Christ with Dr. Mike Henderson officiating. Burial was in Childress Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home.

    Leo was born Thursday, April 5, 1928  in Rockdale, Texas to Matthew and Mary Ellen (Kyle) Hickman. He and Billye married  Sept. 2, 1949 in Beaumont.

    Leo  joined the Texas Department of Public Safety in 1956. Leo was a fourth generation law enforcement officer and had always aspired to be a Texas Ranger.  He fulfilled that dream in 1971, and upon his retirement was the oldest active Texas Ranger at age 72. He loved his job, and was an expert marksman.

    Leo was a great husband and  father who raised four children. He was a Christian man and was a member of the Childress Church of Christ. He has lived in Childress since 1971.

    Leo was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Lee Hickman; and one sister, Mary Ellen Hickman.

    He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Billye Hickman of Childress; son, Jay Hickman and wife Rhonda of Childress; daughters Kay Hubbard and husband Norman of Moody, and Jan Wrzesinski of Hurst; grandchildren Jarrod Hubbard and wife Holly, Derek Wrzesinski and wife Agnieszka, Nicholas Wrzesinski, Jacob Bass, Benjamin Hickman and Rachel Hickman; and numerous extended family, friends and law enforcement family.
