S. F. Herod

— S. F. Herod passed away Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013, at the age of 80.  He had resided at Heritage Oaks Retirement Village in Corsicana the last seven years.

S. F. was born Feb. 10, 1933 in Richland. His parents were Zora Compton and Silvanus F. Herod, Sr. He graduated from Richland High School, Navarro College, and University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Meteorology.

He was a veteran and worked as a meteorologist while in the Navy for two years. He observed the detonation of first hydrogen bomb from 250 miles away while on the island of Kwajalein.  After serving in the Navy, he worked for Texas Instruments and then taught school and coached at Richland High School. In 1959, he was employed by Braniff Airlines as a meteorologist. On Sept. 3, 1966, S. F. married Gloria Faye Magness of Wortham.  From 1975-1978, he taught math and science at Mildred High School.  He returned to Braniff until 1982 when the airline filed bankruptcy.  He returned to teaching and taught at Collins Middle School and Drane Middle School until his retirement in 1998.  He owned a ranch in Eureka and raised cattle for many years.   

He had also been a member of the Masonic Lodge and Order of the Eastern Star for 59 years. He was a Past Master of the Eureka Lodge No. 1060 and Past Worthy Patron of Richland OES Chapter 392. He always enjoyed traveling across the United States and other countries; teaching/coaching; attending all sporting events of area high schools; hunting; water skiing; playing dominoes, cards, and chess; and being a rancher.

S. F. was preceded in death by his parents and Holly’s mother, Gloria Faye Magness Herod. He was a member of the Richland and Corsicana United Methodist Churches.

S. F. is survived by his daughter Holly, her husband Steve and grandson Cooper Clay of Plano, his sister Euneva H. Taylor of Longview;  brother-in-law and sister-in-law Fenley and Louise Magness; niece Lesa Hancock and great nieces Taylor and Sydney Groveton of Mexia. He is also survived by niece and husband, Donna and Dale Story of Huntsville, and numerous cousins and friends.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013 at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home.

Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013 at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Benny Horn officiating. Burial will be at Richland Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Brandon Blue, Monte Huggins, Kenneth Murray, Bill Batton, Bill Greeson, Homer Jones.
