Angie Elizabeth Willard

Mrs. Angie Elizabeth Willard, 93, of Mesquite, passed away April 14, 2013, in Dallas of age related complications.

Born to Francis Marion Martin Jr. and Bessie Scott Martin on May 14, 1919, in Corsicana, she was descended from prominent early pioneer families. The Martins settled eastern Navarro County and the community of Old Wadeville, south of today’s town of Kerens. She was the granddaughter of Lt. Gov. Francis Marion Martin and Mrs. Angie Harle Martin of Corsicana, and was named for her grandmother. Her grandmother’s brother, James L. Harle, had served as both mayor of Corsicana and county judge of Navarro County.

At a young age, Mrs. Willard moved with her family to El Paso and was reared there. She heard many stories of her famous grandfather and the early days in Navarro County and Texas from her father, as well as her grandmother who lived with them. Her father was an early photographer in El Paso and Navarro County. Many of his photographs were still owned by Mrs. Willard at the time of her death.

She was educated in the public schools in El Paso and Corsicana after the family returned to Navarro County in the 1930’s. Angie was a graduate of Corsicana High School. In 1944 she married Luther Ray Hayes. They had one daughter, Marion Elizabeth Hayes. She later married John Gordon Willard Jr. in1958 and moved to Mesquite where she lived until her death. Gordon Willard preceded her in death in 1985.

Angie Willard remained interested in history throughout her life, being a more than 50 year member of the James Blair Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed oil painting, gardening, rock collecting, sewing, and making jewelry with natural stones. She was an expert in silver ware patterns both new and vintage, and worked for Sterlings until the day the store closed. She dearly loved her pets and all animals.

Mrs. Willard is survived by her daughter, Marion Elizabeth Hayes, and a number of cousins.

A graveside memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 2, 2013, at Oakwood Cemetery, conducted by New Century Hospice Chaplain Jeffrey Leynor.

Memorials may be made to The Dallas Cat Lady, P. O. Box 181671, Dallas, TX 75218,, or an animal rescue of your choice.
