Mabel C. Carpenter

Mabel Charline Barber Carpenter, 85, met her Maker on Friday, April 18, 2014 in Denton. Mabel was a devoted Christian, loyal wife, proud mother and caring grandmother.

Mabel was born on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 29, 1928 in Fairplay, Ark. Not long after Mabel was born, her mother was diagnosed with cancer which she succumbed to just before Mabel’s second birthday. Soon after, her father left for Missouri to seek employment and Mabel was left in the care of two maternal great aunts who ran a boarding house and worked for the telephone company in Prescott, Ark.

After high school graduation, Mabel remained in Prescott, working as a telephone operator and was very active at the First United Methodist Church. The organist at the church set Mabel up on a blind date with the new Chamber of Commerce Executive who had recently relocated from Texas, Rex Carpenter. After steady dating, the couple married on July 28, 1951 and moved to Mexia, Texas where they welcomed the birth of their only child, a son, Chuck, in 1952. Rex’s career as a Chamber of Commerce professional gave them the opportunity to work and live in other Texas towns after Mexia…Ennis, Waxahachie, Henderson and finally in 1966, Corsicana.

Mabel graduated from Henderson Business College and worked as a secretary/receptionist for several years, but the position she held most dear was “Household Executive.” She was proud to call herself Mrs. Rex Carpenter, supported her son in his ambitions, committed herself to numerous community activities and served the United Methodist Church. She was a talented seamstress and created much of her wardrobe. Years later after the birth of her only grandchild, Laura, she crafted dresses and costumes for her as well. In 2011, Rex passed away and soon thereafter, Mabel moved to Denton to be near her son where she departed three years later with her son by her side.

Mabel is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Chuck and Kathy Carpenter of Denton, and granddaughter, Laura of Austin.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 25, 2014 from 10 to 11 a.m. at Corley Funeral Home with Rev. Tom Connolly officiating .

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rose Garden at First United Methodist Church, 320 N. 15th Street, Corsicana, Texas or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, P.O. Box 4527, New York, NY 10163.

An online guestbook is available at and selecting the Mabel Carpenter obituary.
