Alice Gelene Thomas went to be with the Lord Thursday, Jan. 23, 2014. She was born Dec. 7, 1919 to Nathaniel Gaddy and Belle Livingston Gaddy.
Gelene was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Garvin Slone and Milton Thomas, as well as her brother O.L. “Bud” Gaddy and sister Alva Mae Gaddy Thomas.
Those left on this earth as her survivors are her only son Ronald Garvin Slone and his wife Jane who reside in Ennis; three grandchildren, Scott Slone and wife Lisa of Lutz, Fla. and their two children Trinity and Zaiden, Lori Slone Jones and husband Bob of Dallas and their two children, Reagan and Natalie; and Bethany Slone of Ennis; step-children, Jo Ann Thomas of California, Jimmy Thomas of Groesbeck and Glenda Underwood of Austin. Glenda was a very loving and helpful step-daughter. She is also survived by step-grandchildren, Debra Howell of Gilmer, Brad Thomas of Gilmer, and Bobbi and Elaine of California.
Gelene was raised in Silver City and attended school in Purdon. Sometime later her family moved to Corbet. In 1953 Gelene, Garvin and son Ronald became members of Missionary Baptist Church where she remained throughout her life. Gelene remained in her own home until she was no longer able to keep house. At that time she moved to Friendship Towers in the year of 2000, a place that she dearly loved because of the friends she made while there.
During her life, she worked in the sewing factory and spent her time taking care of the sick. She also worked as a sewing instructor at Navarro College. One of her most favorite activities was vegetable gardening and canning. She loved to share the vegetables with her friends and neighbors. As she aged, one of the things she missed the most was her garden. Gelene never met a stranger, and made friends with everyone she met. Some of her favorite stories included surviving the Great Depression, spending her youth working with the NYA in a hospital, and talking about her experiences while working at the Child Development Center.
All of her friends talk about Gelene's caring and loving heart. Several years ago, one of Gelene's nephews and his wife asked her to write a history of the family from her memory. She closed the story with these words, “I am sorry I can't write like I used to, I have arthritis in my hands, but I really love all of you. I know I do not have a lot of years left, but I hope to see you on the other side.”
