Bob Corley passed away early Sunday morning April 14, 2013 with his beloved wife Kathryn at his side. Bob died peacefully after a long and bravely fought battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was born in Corsicana on July 29, 1929 to Ellyn “Jeddy” Dickson Corley and John Roberts Corley Jr. In addition to his wife Kathryn, Bob is survived by three daughters and their families; Chris Corley Ward and Michael R. Ward of San Antonio, DeAnne Corley DeGrand and Jack DeGrand from Sugarland, and Elizabeth Corley of Corsicana; and stepson Kirksey Parker of Houston. He is also survived by grandchildren Patrick Corley Dosser, John Wilson Dosser, Melissa DeGrand and Grace Parker; his brother David Dickson Corley and wife Mary of Fort Worth; nieces Margret Ellyn Corley, Charissa Corley Christopher, Valerie Corley Petrie, Beth Runyon Gideon, and nephews, Dr. David Dickson Corley Jr., Dr. William Runyon Jr., John Andrew Runyon and countless cousins, friends, business associates and others whose lives he touched in simple and profound ways.
Bob was educated in public schools in Corsicana, played football for Corsicana High where he graduated in 1946. He attended New Mexico Military Institute in 1946-47. He then attended the University of Texas in Austin where he became a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and the ROTC. Upon completion of his education and receiving his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Transportation Corps in June 1952, he served in Nantes, France until 1954.
After serving his country, Bob returned to Corsicana where he entered the third generation family business with his father, Corley Funeral Home. Together they served the community until John’s death in 1999. Bob continued the tradition until he retired due to his illness and the business was sold.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents Jeddy and John Corley, his step-daughter Katrina Parker and step-mother, Francis Corley.
Bob was a quiet, kind and compassionate man with a quick wit. He loved animals, always had a dog, even a canary that he named “Willie Sing.” Bob enjoyed many hobbies throughout his life. He loved to fish, and was an accomplished wood carver, and photographer. Bob and Kathryn took some wonderful trips together. In addition to Europe, they went to China, Japan and India where they studied the culture, crafts and folk art of the areas they visited. Bob took the photos, Kathryn asked all the questions, and they came home from each trip with a profound understanding and knowledge of the countries they had visited.
Bob will be remembered as a source of comfort and strength by the families he served during his professional career, and deeply missed by his family and friends.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at Corley Funeral Home.
Interment will be 10 a.m. Thursday, April 18, 2013, at Oakwood Cemetery, followed by funeral service at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church.
