Evelyn Lee Wilson

— Evelyn Lee Wilson, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed from this life on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013, at the Heritage Oaks Retirement Village in Corsicana.

She was born in the St. Elmo Community near Winkler on April 13, 1923, to Sam and Estelle Lee. She came to personal faith in Christ at the age of 17. After graduating from Streetman High School as Valedictorian in 1940, she moved to Dallas to complete a course of study at the Metropolitan Business School. She then returned to Corsicana to serve as secretary to Mr. Ed Dillard in the AAA (Agricultural) Office at the Navarro County Courthouse. It was after the end of World War II that she met David Woodrow Wilson. The couple married June 28, 1946. In the coming years they made worldwide news through United Press International upon the births of their three children, born three years apart, all on July 13, also the birthday of Evelyn’s mother.

She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Corsicana, serving as her Sunday school class treasurer for many years and as a member of the Pate Bible Study Circle. She also served several years as a Training Union leader for children in the Primary age group. She often expressed appreciation for the fine Bible teaching she received from the pastors and teachers at the church. Throughout her children’s Sam Houston Elementary School years, she served as an officer of the PTA and a room mother. She was inducted as an Alumna-By-Choice of Baylor University in 1999. Evelyn worked alongside her husband in building the family business, Wilson Electric.

She was preceded in death in 1980 by her husband of 34 years, David Woodrow Wilson Sr.

Survivors include her children, David W. Wilson Jr. and wife Mary Beth of Corsicana, Betty Wilson and husband Ron of Waco, and Jane Wilson of Dallas; grandchildren Jennifer Chakmakjian and husband Stephen of Waco, John Wilson and wife Laura, of Hamden, Conn., Elizabeth Pillans and husband Justin, and Trey Wilson and wife Cara, all of Corsicana, and Mary Kathryne Wilson of Tyler; as well as four great-grandchildren, Caleb, Katie, and David Chakmakjian, all of Waco, and Noelle Wilson of Hamden, Conn. She is also survived by a sister, Estelle Shelton of Corsicana; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, at Corley Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at First Baptist Church in Corsicana with Dr. Stephen G. Hatfield and the Rev. B.F. Risinger Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Stephen Chakmakjian, Carl Lee, Chip Sargent, Lee Shelton, John Wilson and Trey Wilson.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, or the Music Ministry of First Baptist Church, Corsicana.

The family expresses heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Kent Rogers and the staff at Heritage Oaks Retirement Village for their loving care.

Evelyn will be greatly missed, but all who love her take comfort that she has met her Savior face-to-face and is now united with many loved ones.

“..and He shall wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there shall no longer be any death; there shall no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.” (Rev. 21:4). This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
