J.M. ‘Jim’ Gage Jr.

J. M. (Jim) Gage Jr., 94, of San Saba, went home to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on Jan. 11, 2014, in Corsicana.

Visitation will be 12:30 to 2 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 14, 2014, at the Blaylock Funeral Chapel in San Saba with the funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. at the Blaylock Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Chris Osborne, Central Baptist Church of College Station, Texas officiating. Interment will follow in the San Saba City Cemetery.

He was born in San Saba on Feb. 22, 1919, to Jonas and Bertha Gage and was a lifelong resident of San Saba. He graduated from San Saba High School in three years in 1936, and was a self-educated man in many disciplines. He served in the Armored Division in the U.S. Army Tank division in World War II stationed in Fort Riley, Kansas. He was scheduled for overseas duty when a tank accident in 1945 resulted in a broken back and rehabilitation. After recovery, he was assigned to the Army Canine Training division prior to his discharge in April of 1946. He returned to San Saba where he was a lifelong farmer, rancher, and star route mail carrier. In addition he worked as a carpenter, welder, sand & soil contractor, custom hay baler and pecan harvester, photographer and several other vocations. He had the vision, engineering mind, talent and intellect to accomplish anything he set his mind to do or build, even when others thought the task impossible. He had such a photographic memory that many people could not believe possible as proven by his memorization of the Masonic Funeral Rites. He always had a way with animals and could tame and train horses and dogs in ways that made people marvel at his skills. He was a survivor of the post Depression and World War II eras and worked harder than anyone around him to support his family and give his children college educations at Texas A&M. Jim loved the outdoors and always had a huge garden each year and delighted in giving away vegetable and fruit he raised. In his earlier years he fished and hunted and was known to be a “crack shot” with a rifle. However, it can be said that his hobby was work and more work.

On Oct. 1, 1940, he married Mary Kathryn Golden and they enjoyed married life for 68 years until her death in February of 2009. They were both active members of the San Saba First Baptist Church for many years where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher of the Couples Class and Men’s and Youth classes . In addition he taught the Men’s Downtown Bible Class on KBAL radio and the Eventide Nursing Home class. In later years he enjoyed gospel singing with friends at local and area nursing homes and church gatherings. For more than 30 years he prepared and wrote a weekly article, “Biblical Gem,” for the San Saba News and Star until his health decline in early 2013. After years of research, study and writing, he published a book “The Flip Side of the Rapture” at the age of 92 in 2011. He loved and studied God’s Word with a passion and shared the salvation of Christ with many people over his long life. His spiritual impact in the lives of several men led them to be called by God to full time ministry. His major regret at the end of his life was that because of declining physical and mental capacities he could not serve his Lord in the same manner he did when he was younger and stronger.

He was preceded in death by his loving and unselfish wife, Kathryn Golden Gage, his parents, three brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include his two sons and their wives, Dean and Kathy Gage of College Station and Mike and Deadra Gage of Corsicana; five grandchildren, Michelle Gage Wilding and husband David of Rockwall, Nicole Gage Wells and husband David of Burleson, Julie Gage Williams and husband Cliff of Willis, Debbie Gage Sanches and husband Heath of Corsicana and John Gage of Corsicana; and seven great grandchildren.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the doctors at Scott & White in College Station and the staff at Heritage Oaks Retirement Center in Corsicana for their wonderful care and concern in his last days. Jim will be missed by all his family and friends and his impact in their lives will live forever.
