Sharon Beatrice Williams-Hoch

Sharon Beatrice Williams-Hoch, 59, of Richardson, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn. surrounded by family and loved ones.

Sharon was born Aug. 23, 1954 in Corsicana, the daughter of the late Donald Odell Williams and surviving mother, Mary Toogood Williams.

She was the second of five siblings, and lived with her family in Richland and Wortham as a young child, before the family moved to Corsicana.

Sharon was a student at James L. Collins Catholic School, and active in church activities at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. She participated in Campfire Girls, Catholic Youth Organization, and attended Collins Junior High School for a time.

She chaired and coordinated city-wide March of Dimes fundraising campaigns, and volunteer numerous hours as a candy striper at Navarro County Memorial Hospital. Graduating in 1972 from Corsicana High School, she was active in student council and science and physics programs, and received the honor of representing Corsicana High School at a nuclear energy symposium at UT Austin. She also earned a varsity letter in tennis.

Sharon received a Jim Collins Scholarship to attend college, and first attended Navarro College, where she studied art and theatre, and performed in various theatre productions. She then went on to East Texas State University and studied philosophy and Russian language.

For a time, she worked at the Corsicana Daily Sun as a proofreader.

She transferred to UT Austin and graduated with honors in 1979 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosphy and the humanities. While at UT, she worked as editor of the UT Press and as a proofreader for Texas Senate.

Sharon began her nursing career by attending UT Austin nursing school and graduating in 1982 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing, followed by obtaining her license as a registered nurse. She worked as a psychiatric nurse at various private and public hospitals in Austin, including working as a nursing supervisor at Austin State Hospital.  

She graduated from UT-Dallas in 1989 with Master’s in Public Policy degree with an emphasis in health policy and continued her postgraduate work at UT-Dallas in economics related to health policy; she also served as a part-time instructor of health courses in the Dallas County Community College System.

Moving to Washington, D.C. Sharon worked as a nurse at George Washington University (GWU) Hospital while attending graduate school at GWU in health policy and Georgetown University in medical ethics.

On April 8, 1993 Sharon married Irving Joseph Hoch in Corsicana and moved to Richardson. They never had children, but had four dogs that they considered their children and loved very much, Bonnie (deceased) and Bart (deceased), and Mattie and Fred still living. After moving back to Texas, Sharon worked in the Dallas area for the remainder of her life, where, over the course of her nursing career, she had worked at most of the private and public hospitals.

Sharon was diagnosed with lung cancer on Aug. 1, 2013. By her request, her remains  were donated to the University of Minnesota  and her eyes were donated to the University of Minnesota Lions Eye Bank.

Sharon was preceded in death by her husband, Irving Joseph Hoch, and father, Donald O. Williams and younger brother, Joey Williams and brother-in-law, Denis Schirmers.

She is survived by her oldest brother, Donald Williams, J.r and wife Dr. Ruth Condray-Williams of Carson City, Nev.; her younger sister, Patricia Schirmers of Eden Prairie, Minn.; her youngest brother, Victor T. Williams and wife Sandra Williams of The Colony; her nephews and nieces, Dr. Angie Glasgow of Davis, Calif., Dr. Joseph Schirmers of Minneapolis, Minn., Grace Williams of North Richland Hills, Weston Williams of Lubbock, and Catie Schirmers of Wellesley, Mass.
