Francis Roena Cowden was born Nov. 30, 1916 in Corsicana, the second of three daughters to Grover Cleveland Cowden and Queenie Mai Bell Cowden. She passed away at the age of 96 on March 20, 2013 at the Holly Hall Health Care Center in Houston.
Frances graduated from Corsicana High School and then from Texas Women’s University in 1938 with a Major in Art Education and Minor in English. She taught school for six years in the Texas towns of Yancy, Cameron and Beaumont. She worked towards a Masters Degree at the University Colorado Boulder and the University of Texas. In 1944 she was hired by Schlumberger and remained with Schlumberger in Houston for nearly 38 years, using her talent in art, until retiring in 1981 as a senior graphics technician. Frances traveled extensively worldwide visiting every continent except Australia and Antarctica. She was an avid photographer and enjoyed giving travelogues of the places she visited. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church, Keystone Sunday School Class, Quillian Sunday School Class, and United Methodist Women, Reading Circle. She enjoyed working with her church in preparing meals for the hungry and homeless. She also belonged to the Photographic Society of America, Desk and Derrick Club of Houston, and College Women’s Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Elizabeth Adair and Melba Foster.
She leaves, to mourn her passing, cousins and many nieces and nephews as well as many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 24, 2013 at the Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery on FM 2555, just outside of Corsicana, with Rev. Leslie Byrd officiating.
