Kenneth Earl Gibbs

Kenneth Earl Gibbs, 68, of Wortham, passed away May 10, 2013, at his home.

At an early age, Ken and his family moved to California and finally settled into the small community of Hemet where Ken spent the majority of his school years. He gave his life to God at an early age, attended Seminary school during his senior year and graduated as an ordained minister. Ken and family moved to Nebraska and started a church which is still very active and has grown considerably from the early days of meeting in his home. Upon returning to Texas, Ken decided to take a leave of absence from the ministry and begin a new career as a salesman and repairman of sewing machines and vacuum cleaners. He discovered his calling and made a lifelong career doing what he did best, making people happy (especially the ladies) by fixing their sewing machines and/or restoring older machines that had special sentimental values. After working in retail and owning his own store in the Houston area for years, Ken and Susan decided to pack up and leave the chaos of smog and traffic and move to Wortham. Ken’s Sew & Vac was opened and the rest is history.

Ken treasured the blessings of faith, family and friends. He knew the Lord and always said  God allowed him to live way past the usual life expectancy after receiving a double lung transplant in the year 2000 because he felt God had a purpose for him on earth. Ken’s love for Wortham and the desire to make a difference prompted him to serve on the City Council for several years and ended with him becoming Mayor for a short time before health issues caused him to resign. He was also recognized as the founder of the Presbyterian’s peanut brittle fundraising project each holiday season.

Ken leaves us with many wonderful memories. He touched and influenced many lives. Those who knew Ken would agree he was a wonderful, caring person. He was loved and will be greatly missed.

Ken is proceeded in death by his parents; former wife, Sondra; son, Brian; grandson, Joshua; sisters ,Kathy and Doris; brother, Keith; and mother-in-law, Grace Sims.
