Alice Bernice Venters

Alice Bernice Venters was an avid learner, stern teacher, devoted mother and grandmother, and loving friend.

The angel of silence answered the call of Alice Bernice Venters on May 8, 2013, and united her with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Ending her life here on earth and giving her a new beginning of a life everlasting with her Father in heaven. She was born in Corsicana on July 7, 1927, to Frank Douglas Sr. and Louise Hill Douglas, who both preceded her in death. She wed in holy matrimony to Rufus Venters in the latter part of the 1940s. Through their short union two children were born, Rufus Carlton and Myrtle Inez.

Alice received her formal education in the Corsicana School District, graduating from G.W. Jackson High School in the early 1940s. She went off to college after high school to Huston-Tillotson of Austin. She furthered her studies at Prairie View A&M University were she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. After being hired by the Corsicana Independent School District she advanced her education at Prairie View receiving a Master of Education degree.

She was a dedicated and devoted educator, spending countless hours preparing engaging lessons for her students. She was a member of several city, state and national teacher organizations. Alice’s teaching career spanned over 37 years retiring in 1992. During her years of service she gained the respect of educators across the district. She was a source of guidance and inspiration to many. To her students she was ever remembered for her affectionate but stern nature.

 Alice came to know the Lord at a young age at the First Independent Baptist Church where she learned many skills receiving training through the Galilee Griggs Memorial District Association and guidance from dedicated members of her church. She was a faithful servant in the church. She and sisters Esther Price and Irene Gardner  were sponsors of  the youth department in the early 1960s. Later in life she was appointed Zone 3 Chairlady of the Galilee Griggs Memorial District Association. She diligently served as church treasurer for many years and also in her retirement was a participant in the community bible study offered at the Northside Baptist Church.  

Alice served the community in many ways including serving for many years as secretary of the Texas Retired Teachers Association.

Alice was called Home at age 85.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Frank Douglas Jr. and George Douglas; and sister, Charlotte Marie Lemmons.

Survivors include a son, Rufus Venters (Nancy), Kailua, Hawaii; daughter, Myrtle Fleming, Corsicana; former daughter-in-law, Dyan Venters Schmidt (Richard), Fullerton, Calif.; former son-in-laws, Dr. Terrance Johnson (Gayle), Nashville, Tenn., and C.E. Fleming (Nancy) Aurora, Colo.; grandchildren, Efrem Venters, San Diego, Calif. ,Erik Venters, Laguna, Calif., Erin Powell (George), San Marcos, and Elena Baucom (Micah), Grand Prairie; great-grandchildren, Jordan Venters, Kelton and Kaitlin Powell, Brynnan and Benjamin Venters, Makela and Makyla Harvey, Micah Jr. and Mason Baucom; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family and friends.

Visitation will be held 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, May 13, 2013, at Ross and Johnson Mortuary.

Funeral services are 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at the First Independent Baptist Church, 701 G. W. Jackson Avenue. Interment will follow at Woodland Memorial Park.
