It is with sorrow that Lucy Mae Washington died on Nov. 7, 2013, at her home in Dallas, Texas. She was 83-years-old.
Lucy was the fifth of six children and the only girl born to the late Isiah and Hattie Washington of Corsicana. She graduated in 1948 from the former Jackson High School in Corsicana and she received a bachelor’s degree from Prairie View University in 1953 majoring in music. Subsequently, she earned a Master’s degree from Prairie View. Music, especially piano, was her life-long passion.
A love for music inspired her to enter the teaching profession where she taught for more than 40 years. She spent a major part of her teaching career in the Waxahachie and Dallas School Systems before retiring from the Dallas School System a number of years ago. Earlier in her career she taught in Georgia and Mississippi.
Lucy Mae is survived by her two brothers, Alvin Washington of San Diego, Calif., and Clark Washington of Missouri City, Texas. She is also survived by her nieces, nephews, and cousins of the Washingtons and the larger White-Moore family.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, at the Evergreen Memorial Funeral Home 6449 University Hills Blvd., Dallas.
