Peggy Juanita Sims

Corsicana Daily Sun

— Peggy Juanita "Nanny" Sims, 87, went home to be with her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, April 30, 2014. She was born Aug. 12, 1926 in Denton to Winnie Ella Ann Crowder Wills and Allen Addison Wills.

Peggy had three great loves, the Lord, her family and “Her Joe.” Joe and Peggy were married by Pastor Frank Weeden on Jan. 10, 1947 at First Baptist Church of Denton. They immediately moved to Corsicana where they joined the First Baptist Church on Jan. 15, 1947.

Peggy served as Educational Secretary at First Baptist Corsicana for several years. She was better known as Joe's helpmate, serving as his secretary at Joe G. Sims Bookkeeping and Tax Services for many years. Her greatest gift, however, was writing and teaching. Peggy wrote many newspaper editorials, from topics on travel to every day circumstances. God also used her in a mighty way to minister to young men and women with special needs. She began the Special Ministries Sunday School class for her church and, in her years of teaching and directing, the class grew from one to over 50. Peggy was also asked to write Sunday School literature for the mentally handicapped for the Southern Baptist Convention and led workshops all over the U.S on the topic. God gave Peggy an empathetic heart and great gift to share it with.

Peggy loved spending time with family and friends. She and her beloved Joe traveled extensively throughout their lives. She was often heard to say to Joe, "When and where is our next trip?" They spent much of their time camping, serving in mission work all over the world, cruising to exotic places with brothers, sisters and in-laws or "just" the family reunions at Hidden Acres Encampment. Peggy's grandchildren have fond memories of their Nanny. From Christmases at Lake Murray, to summers in Branson or just singing, swinging or playing games at Nanny and Papa's house. Any time with "Nanny" was a special one.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joe Gorman Sims, sister Jane Reed, brother Hubert Wills, great-granddaughter Morgan Davis, along with several in-laws and dear friends.

She is survived by her children, Joe Allen and wife Vicki Sims, Barbara Ann Acock and her husband Danny, Karen Elizabeth Cox and husband Mike, and her sister, Frances Moore of Breckenridge. She has six grandchildren, Kristina Renee Chandler and husband Joe, Andrea Elizabeth Owens and husband Ross, Jessica Ann Ockershauser and husband Patrick, Shawn Michael Cox and wife Hedwika, Jason Daniel Acock and Aaron Matthew Sims; seven great-grandchildren, Ashley, Makenzie, Chase, Alexandra, Claire, Liam and Olivia; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins and in-laws who will miss her.

Visitation is 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 2, 2014 at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home.

She will be remembered at a memorial service at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014 at First Baptist Church. The service will be officiated by B.F. Risinger of First Baptist Church and Dr. Rick Lamb of Northside Baptist Church. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Pallbearers for the service will be Peggy's grandsons, Jason Acock, Shawn Cox, Patrick Ockershauser, Ross Owens, Aaron Sims, and nephews, Tripp Moore and Pat Reed.

The family sends a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Sterling House of Corsicana, the community where Peggy resided for the past two years as well as the staff at Hand In Hand Hospice who cared for her in her final days.
