LaVerne Maxfield passed away Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014 at age 88. She was born Aug. 12, 1925 to Frank and Mary Rumbo. The youngest of nine children, she grew up in Chandler, Texas where she was an outstanding student, basketball player and was salutatorian of her graduating class.
She was a professional level seamstress; she was the person always asked to bring pecan pies to any food event. She always used her second name, LaVerne, instead of her first, Clarice. She was a much sought-after Sunday School teacher; she was deathly afraid of snakes. She was organized to a fault; she was immaculate about her-house and her person. She treasured her daily time of personal Bible study and devotionals; she was a Mother who neither hovered nor interfered, but was there in a moment when she was needed.
Music was a central focus of her life. She loved close harmony of ladies quartets; she was a treasured member of the Sanctuary Choir and the Solid Rockers. But the music of her life grew faint in October of 2009 when she lost her singing partner and the love of her life, the handsome and charming Ross, her husband of 67 years. The music was never quite as sweet again.
LaVerne is survived by her daughter Sandra Huffman and husband Lloyd, sons Ken Maxfield and wife Brenda and Ron Maxfield and wife Carole; grandchildren Julie Spriggins and husband Shane, Quentin and Houston Maxfield, David Huffman and fiancé Christina, Steve Huffman and wife Wendy, Chris Miller and wife Lana, Tim Miller, Tracy Petty and husband Kevin; great-grandchildren Sydney Elizabeth Scott and Jackson Alexander Scott, Morgan, Madelyn, Sophie, Natalie Miller and Zane, Tatum and Reagan Petty; sisters Jewell Stallings and Vola Alexander; sisters-in-law Sue Maxfield and Gertrude Rumbo; 26 nephews and nieces; “like Family” friends Frances King, Joy Williamson, and Tom Lucas.
Visitation with the family will be 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014 at Corley Funeral Home.
