— John Thomas Helms, 75, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, in Plano. He was born to Douglas Thomas and Ethelyn Helms on Feb. 5, 1939 in Woodlake, Texas.  

He married Melba Ruth Jacobs on Nov. 26, 1959 in Dawson. He served in the United States Marine Corps from Feb. 3, 1958 to June 5, 1963, with an Honorable Discharge at a rank of Corporal E-4. He went to work for K&O Equipment Sales in the fall of 1975 and retired as the Vice President of Operations in 1999. A loving husband and father, he enjoyed hunting, spending time with family, golfing, and traveling.  

He was a hard-working family man and could always be depended on in a time of need. He was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in June 1991; over the years he endured nine separate treatment series of chemotherapy before losing the battle to cancer and receiving the ultimate reward of Heaven. He will be greatly missed here on earth, but remembered by all who knew and loved him in a much greater way as he will always be in our hearts.

He was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife of 52 years Melba Ruth (Jacobs) Helms; son, Randy Thomas Helms; brothers, Jerry Don Helms and Joe Michael Helms; niece, Melissa Renee’ Helms; nephews, Darrell Olan Cox, James Thomas Miller, and Christopher Oid Helms; father and mother in-law, Arvel and Myrtle Jacobs; brothers-in-law, J.E. Miller, Olan Cox, and Jerry Jacobs; and sisters-in-law Marie Chapman, Lourine Jacobs, and JoAnn Bryant.

He is survived by his daughters, Darlene Shannon of Buchanan Dam; Denise and Ronnie Green of Garland; Donna and Terry Moran of Caddo Mills; and two grandchildren raised as their own, Jessica and Joe Kruse of Corsicana; and Ryan and Holly Helms of Scurry. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Samantha Kaye Moran, Luke Daniel Green, Mary Kate Moran, John Lee Shannon, and Hannah Marie Green and two great-grandchildren, Thomas Lee Kruse and Randi Annette Kruse. Survivors also include his two sisters, Shirley Ann Cox of McKinney and Kittie Jean Miller of Corsicana; brothers and sisters-in-law, Sandra Helms of Durant, Okla.; Pat Helms of Vidor; Fred and Helen Jacobs of Mesquite; Eleanor and Frank Greer of Corsicana; Bobby and Pat Jacobs of Coolidge; Dixie Jacobs of Melrose, NM; Ray and Bobbie Jacobs of Corsicana; Jake and Diane Jacobs of Corsicana; David and Michelle Jacobs of Lampasas; Sandra and Johnny Hughes of Corsicana; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014 at the Corley Funeral Home.  

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014 at the Corley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Duane Crane officiating. Interment will follow in the Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Russell Boyd, Heath Jacobs, Nick Chapman, John Robert Boyd, Robert Stroud, and Brian Warren. Honorary Pallbearers are Fred Jacobs, Bobby Jacobs, Ray Jacobs, Jake Jacobs, David Jacobs, Richard Cox, Mark Chapman, Michael Jacobs and Michael Helms.
