Dr. C. Roland Haden

Dr. C. Roland Haden passed away peacefully in his sleep to meet the Lord on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013.  He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joyce Weathers Haden; his daughters, Cathy Fuchs and Kimberly Jensen; and son Clay Haden.  He is also survived by his mother, Mary Aline Haden; brothers, Jim and David Haden; his grandchildren, Landon Fuchs, Hayley Jensen, Macey Fuchs, Henry Haden and Roland Davis Haden; as well as his great-grandsons, Oren Swint and Flynn Fuchs.  Roland was born in Houston on April 10, 1940.  He grew up in Blooming Grove, where he graduated from high school in 1958 as Class President.

Roland retired on Aug. 31, 2002, after a long and distinguished career in academia, as Vice Chancellor of Engineering for the Texas A&M University System and the Dean of the Dwight Look College of Engineering at Texas A&M University.  He received his B.S. degree  magna cum laude from the University of Texas at Arlington, his M.S. from the California Institute of Technology, and his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin, all in Electrical Engineering.  Roland was a Fellow of the American Society for Engineering Education and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. In 1998, he was honored by the ASEE with the Donald E. Marlowe Award as a national role model in advancing engineering education and the engineering profession. He was named an inaugural member of the Texas Governor’s Science and Technology Council and served on the Texas Board of Professional Engineers.

Dr. Haden served on the Board of Directors of E-Systems and Square D Company, both Fortune 500 companies, as well as a number of other corporate boards, including Inter-Tel, Inc. and  Crosstex Energy, MLP.

He authored more than 100 articles, reports and presentations and was the author or editor of three books.

He was a member and past-chair of the General Electric Senior Research Award Committee and chair of the Public Policy Committee, both of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), chairing the 1998 Public Policy Colloquium in Washington, D.C.  He also twice served on the Executive Committee of the Engineering Deans Council of ASEE.  He was a past chair of the Professional Engineers in Education Division of the TSPE, the nation's largest state professional Engineering organization, and a past chair of the Texas Deans of Engineering Organization.

C. Roland Haden served as a faculty member of the Electrical Engineering Department in the 1970’s, both at Texas A&M University and the University of Oklahoma.  He began his administrative career as Department Head of Electrical Engineering at the University of Oklahoma and then served as Dean of Engineering at Arizona State University at the age of 38, being the youngest Dean of Engineering in the U.S. at the time.  He later served as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost at Arizona State.  Roland then became Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost at Louisiana State University.  Eventually he returned to Texas A&M in 1993, to serve as Vice Chancellor and Dean of Engineering.

He served as a member of the Technology Committee of the Bryan-College Station Economic Development Corporation. In March 2000, he was named the first Volunteer of the Year by the Bryan-College Station Economic Development Corporation and earlier was the recipient of a similar award from the Greater Phoenix Economic Development Group.

Roland, a devoted Christian husband and father, loved traveling with Joyce, studying history and genealogy. He was a member of the Wingfield Society, recently serving as the society’s Lord of the Manor.  He was also a Son of the American Revolution, Son of the Texas Revolution, and commissioned as an Admiral in the Texas Navy by Governor Rick Perry.

Roland was greatly loved by his family and friends.  He will be greatly missed.

A time for family to receive friends will be from 5 to 8 p.m.  Friday, Aug. 30, 2013 at Hillier Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013 at the  A&M Church of Christ, 2475 Earl Rudder Freeway South in College Station.  Aggie game day attire is welcome.

A graveside service will take place at the Dresden Cemetery in Dresden, Navarro County, Texas at 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013.
