Jerry 'Jake' Wayne Jacobs

Jerry “Jake” Wayne Jacobs, 76, of Melrose, NM was called to Heaven on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014. Jerry was born in Corsicana on Feb. 21, 1937 to Arvel and Myrtle Jacobs.

Jerry served 14 years in the United States Army National Guard and then worked for Burlington Northern Railroad for 40 years; he retired in 1999. Jerry was a member of the Curry County Bowling League, Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen, Melrose Fire Department as a member and chief for numerous years, and Melrose Lions Club. He served two terms on the Melrose City Council and coached Little League baseball for many years, all while being an active member of the United Methodist Church of Melrose. If Jerry wasn’t busy being the “handy-man” of Melrose he was spending time with family and friends hunting, fishing or playing dominoes.

He married his bride Dixie Jackson Jacobs on June 29, 1958 in New Port, AR. Jerry is survived by his wife Dixie and all four children, Lynette Fish, Michael Jacobs (Tammie), Kenny Jacobs (Tammy), all of Melrose, Karen Burns of Clovis, NM, and Philip Daly of Arizona. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Chesnea Clemmons (Seth); Jason Burns (Janessa); Kelly Fish; Jared Burns; Kyle Jacobs; Josh Broom; Kendra Jacobs; Kaleb Broom; two great-grandchildren, Jaxon and Jaselee Burns, as well as five brothers, Fred Jacobs of Mesquite, David Jacobs of Lampasas, Bobby Jacobs of Coolidge, and Jake and Ray Jacobs, both of Corsicana, and two sisters, Eleanor Greer and Sandra Hughes, both of Corsicana.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Marie Chapman and Melba Helms, and one sister-in-law, Lourine Jacobs.

Pallbearers were Danny Fish, Dee Fish, Gary Holloway, Gordon Morris, Johnny Bruce and Steve Boyd. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. David Stalker and staff, RGH Medical floor staff, Jimmy Dale Smith, Butch Smith, Don Hightower, Don Gunn, and many, many friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014 at 10 a.m. at the Melrose Municipal Schools Old Gym with Rev. Danny Sanders officiating and Rev. Bethany Carpenter assisting. Arrangements were under the care and direction of Steed-Todd Funeral Home and Crematory, 800 E. Manana Blvd, Clovis, NM. You may also sign the online guest registry at

The family would like to thank everyone for the numerous phone calls, flowers, food, and prayers. Things may never seem the same as they were before this loss, but we are so blessed to have had someone so great to love. “And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen and establish you.” 1 Peter 5:10.

In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Melrose Methodist Youth Center at American Heritage Bank.
