Rev. Eugene Edward Wood

The Rev. Eugene Edward Wood, 94, passed away Friday, Oct. 18, 2013 at Heritage Oaks West following a lengthy illness.

He was born Dec. 22, 1918, in Abbeville, La.

He was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. Dr. and Mrs. B. Oliver Wood, a brother Timothy Wood, and his wife of 44 years, Jane Dickey Wood.

He is survived by his wife, Frances B. Wood, brother, B. Oliver Wood, Jr., and three children, Elizabeth W. Gordon and husband Danny, Jim Wood and wife Amelia, and Dorothy W. Rutledge. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Lora Wood Plemons, Bill Wood, and Andrew Gordon. Great-grandchildren are Claire Plemons, Peyton Duncan, Janie Caroline Plemons, Ashlyn Elizabeth Wood, Alyssa Jane Wood, Daphne Ann Gordon, Jonathan Edward Gordon, Alexandra Jane Gordon, and Emma Lynn Gordon. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

He grew up in San Angelo, where his father was minister of The First Presbyterian Church for 35 years. He felt a call to the ministry as a student at San Angelo Junior College and went on to graduate from The University of Texas at Austin, and Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He served as a Presbyterian minister in Texas for 42 years. His pastorates included churches in San Antonio, Conroe, Hillsboro, McAllen and Corsicana, where he was the beloved pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church for 27 years. Following his retirement in 1983, he was named Pastor Emeritus of Westminster, an honor he cherished.

He was an active member of Rotary International throughout his adult life and served that organization in many capacities including several terms as president. He was instrumental in the formation of the Corsicana Ministerial Alliance in the 1950's. He served on many local boards including those of The Salvation Army and Family Service Association. He was an enthusiastic supporter of Corsicana athletics, particularly the high school football team in the early 1960's when he served as president of the Dad's Club and followed the team wherever they played.

He loved traveling and made several trips to various destinations in Europe including the Holy Land and the British Isles where he studied at St. Andrews University with the renowned Biblical scholar, William Barclay. After his retirement he spent much of his time in the mountains of Ruidoso, N.M., or on the Texas Gulf Coast in Rockport where he enjoyed boating and fishing.

He will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle in a family who adored him. A wonderful man who put the Lord first in his life, his greatest earthly joy was his family. A “people-person” with a charismatic personality, he had a superb sense of humor and loved to laugh and joke with his countless friends. He was the epitome of integrity and a fountain of kindness and generosity. He was the ultimate pastor, never failing to lend a listening ear and give sage counsel to anyone who sought his advice. He influenced the lives of hundreds of people throughout his life, not just through his work but as a living example of what a Christian should be.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Heritage Oaks West, Girling Hospice, and his personal caregivers Bertha Woodard, Lois McGaugh, Nancy Walker, Shamika Harris, Gloria Ballard, and Othera Barlow. They gave unselfishly of their time and talent to make our dad more comfortable in his last years.

Visitation will be held at Corley Funeral Home on Monday evening, Oct. 21, 2013 from 5 to 7 p.m.

A worship service celebrating his life will be led by The Rev. John Conley and The Rev. Dr. Robert M. Young on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 312 N. 13th St., Corsicana, with burial following in Oakwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Don Denbow, Andrew Gordon, Bill Maupin, Marc Maxwell, Dave Ralston, and Bill Wood. Honorary pallbearers are Elders of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church of Corsicana, or to the charity of one's choice.
