Walter Davis Pugh

Walter Davis Pugh, 78, died on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013, at his home in Darien, Conn. He served as a lieutenant in the United States Air Force, stationed in Fort Worth, from 1957-1960. In 1960, he married Sybil Carter Humphries of Corsicana.

Pugh was a Certified Public Accountant who had distinguished himself as a partner at the accounting firm of Price Waterhouse (now PricewaterhouseCoopers) for 35 years. He will also be remembered as an expert gardener and a leader in the community. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, colleague, and friend.

Pugh was born on March 9, 1935 in Philadelphia to Alexander LeFevre Pugh, Jr. and Anna Eckfeldt Davis Pugh. He earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Dartmouth College in 1956, where he was captain of the soccer team and All-American in lacrosse in 1955. Pugh also received an M.B.A. from Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business Administration in 1957.  In 1960, Pugh joined Price Waterhouse's New York office. He went on to work for the firm in their Syracuse, Buffalo, Chicago, and Los Angeles offices and was named partner in 1969. In 1975, Pugh returned to New York to work in the firm's national office. At this time, he and his family moved to Darien. During these years, Pugh was a pioneer in computer-based accounting. He was also active in the Price Waterhouse Foundation and the Price Waterhouse Professorship Program.

Pugh retired from Price Waterhouse in 1995. After his retirement, he served as a consultant with the firm's Office of Government Services in Mumbai, India. He also worked with the president of the Jakarta Stock Exchange on a special project for the firm. He served more than a decade on the Retired Partners Committee of Price Waterhouse and also chaired this committee.

Pugh was a passionate gardener who devoted many hours to his vegetable and flower gardens. In 2004, he became a certified Master Gardener through the University of Connecticut's Cooperative Extension System. He became an Advanced Master Gardener in 2007 and taught several gardening courses at the Bartlett Arboretum.

He donated significant time and expertise to many Darien civic and social organizations. These included the Darien Library and the Darien Police Department, who honored him in 2005 for his work with the Information Technology Committee. He was a leader and organizer in the Darien Men's Association and the Good Old Boys tennis group. In addition to his leadership in the town of Darien, he played a prominent role for decades in alumni fundraising for Dartmouth College.

He is survived by his wife, Sybil Humphries Pugh; his daughter and son-in-law, Wynne P. Jones and Alan M. Jones of Southbury, Conn.; and his grandchildren Ryan, Connor, and Kayla Jones, all of Southbury. He also leaves his daughter Christina Pugh and her partner Richard DelVisco, both of Evanston, Ill.; and his brother and sister-in-law, Alexander L. Pugh, III and Julia Pugh of Concord, Mass.

A memorial service for Walter Pugh will be held on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2013 at 10 a.m. at Noroton Presbyterian Church. His ashes will be buried at the Lower Merion Baptist Cemetery in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Connecticut Chapter, Main Office, 372 Danbury Road, Suite 200, Wilton, CT 06897 or to the Darien Library, 1441 Post Road, Darien, CT 06820.
