June Elizabeth Tekell

Corsicana Daily Sun

— Mrs. June Elizabeth Tekell, loving wife, mother, and grandmother passed away Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014 at Heritage Oaks Retirement Village in Corsicana. She was born June 14, 1923 in Stephen, Minn. to Dr. and Mrs. R.H. Mattson.

June spent most of her childhood in McVille, N.D. where she graduated high school and earned her bachelor degree from the University of North Dakota. While attending UND, June met Joe Bob Tekell. They were married June 28, 1945 and moved to Corsicana in 1946.

June was a faithful and loving mother of her three boys. She was not only a caring homemaker but she loved serving the Lord with everything she had at First Baptist Church for the past 67 years. She served as teacher in both the children and adult Sunday school classes; she spent much of her time serving in mission work in Corsicana and many foreign countries. June was always reaching out to people to bring them to know Jesus as their Savior. She was truly a servant of the Lord in every way. She worked many years with the congregation of Iglesia Baptista Calvario as the pianist and made so many friends in the congregation. June never said “no” when asked to work serving her Lord. Whenever she traveled, and she loved to travel in Europe, South America, and Mexico to name a few, she would always look for missionaries working in the field and offer to help in any way.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Dr. Roger Mattson of Casper, Wyo.

June is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Joe Bob Tekell; her sons; LTC Scott Tekell (retired) and wife, Jodi of Azle; Brad Tekell and wife, Janet of Corsicana; and Mark Tekell of Norman, Okla. Her grandchildren include Kyle Tekell and wife, Rebecca of Savannah, Ga.; Kristen Tekell of Ashville, N.C.; Mary Beth Zimmermann and husband, Eric of Ft. Worth; Emmy Lou Dagnan and husband, Derrick of Nashville, Tenn.; Capt. John Paul Tekell and wife, Audra of Mojave, Calif.; Andrew Tekell of Renton, Wash.; Betsy Carroll and husband, Dan of San Jose, Calif. and Erik Tekell of Norman, Okla. June’s great-grandchildren are Sydney and Nora Tekell of Savannah, Ga.; Madeline and Carlton Dagnan of Nashville, Tenn.; and Stella Carroll of San Jose, Calif. She is also survived by her sister, Marilyn Bostrom of Minneapolis, Minn. and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation with the family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014 at Corley Funeral Home.
