Time to help is now

By Bob Belcher

— A couple of weeks ago, I took space in this column to talk about the needy and the hungry, and a call to action that was needed.

For those of you that heeded that call, and helped as you could, I thank you.

For those of you that haven’t, your help is needed now, more than ever before.

The Navarro County Food Pantry Ministry has been helping to feed the hungry in this area for a long time.

The needs this year are greater than they’ve ever been — I think we all know that.

Whether it be unemployment, illness, personal setbacks or disaster — people are in need.

And with this season that’s upon us, those among us who find themselves in need can be hit pretty hard.

Especially those with families to support — the basic needs must be met before anything else, often leaving nothing “extra” for a holiday treat.

There are charities at work to help meet those “special” needs the holidays bring — churches, the Salvation Army, and various civic and religious organizations.

Helping those folks is important, too, and I hope that you can do so.

But meeting the most basic need of all — hunger — is for some, a 24/7/365 problem.

Can you imagine literally not knowing where your next meal is coming from?

It would be a frightening thought for most — but it is a dreadful reality for some, right here in our town.

And as the folks who provide the help can tell you, people who never before had to seek assistance are now being forced to do so, and in increasing numbers.

Please do what you can to support the Navarro County Food Pantry Ministry, and please do it now.

Whether it be a monetary donation or a box of food — or both — your gift will go a long way in helping to meeting the needs of those in need.

Your donation of $10 enables the Navarro County Food Pantry Ministry to buy 70 pounds of food.

If you could give $50, you’d be helping buy 350 pounds of food.

And for a $100 bill, the return is 700 pounds of food to help feed children and adults in need.

Even just picking up an extra can or two of food when you do your own shopping and setting it aside to drop off at the pantry would be welcome.

There is no more basic human kindness that you can perform.

Please help, and please help now.

If you need to know more, call me.

If you need me to pick up your donation, call me.

If you can help in any way possible, please do.
