Serious talk about protecting your family

By Bob Belcher

— We’ve talked about this before, and it’s time for a reminder.

If you do not have a NOAA weather alert radio in your home (and your business, for that matter) you are doing yourself and your family a potentially disastrous dis-service.

I don’t need to tell you this has been a spring to remember for violent weather in the region.

In fact, in my 26 years in Texas, I can’t remember a spring that’s brought as many violent storms as we’ve seen so far this year.

And the key words there are “so far” — I’m afraid there is much more to come.

I don’t care if you blame it on global warming, La Nina, El Nino, or Uncle Charlie, there is no denying the fact that we live in an area where dangerous weather is never more than a few minutes away.

That brings me back to the NOAA weather alert radio — a topic I’ve written about a half-dozen times, or more, in my years here at the Daily Sun.

If you have one — you are more prepared than someone who doesn’t. Chances are, you already know that, having received notice of numerous watches, warnings and advisories.

If you don’t have one, please get one — today.

These radios, available for as little as $30 or so at several local stores, can literally make the difference between life and death in a weather emergency. They should be as much a part of your home inventory as a smoke detector, carbon monoxide detector and an escape plan for your family should disaster strike.

Sadly, those who have them are still in the minority. And there is no reason not to have one.

The system works on a series of easily programmed “codes” that let you determine the weather warnings you want to receive for whatever areas you wish. It silently (or audibly, if you want) monitors the local National Weather Service NOAA weather radio frequency and automatically “turns on” to provide you of important weather warnings — warnings that may give you precious extra time to seek shelter in the event of storms.

Putting one of the $30 NOAA weather alert radios to work for you gives you a silent partner keeping tabs on your safety, 24/7/365. It sits quietly monitoring the weather so you don’t have to, and comes to life with vital information that could save your life and the lives of your family.

I would also encourage businesses, offices, school campuses — anywhere where people gather — to obtain one of these potentially life-saving devices. Storms can strike any time of the day, any day of the week, any hour of the day.

The difference between life and death in a violent storm can be impacted by the amount of warning you have to seek shelter. The weather folks will tell you that.

And, the survivors will tell you that as well.

It’s a simple as that.

We live in a high-tech world that gives us the ability to seek information from our desktops, laptops, tablets, TVs and telephones — the NOAA radio is just another part of that technology mix that can provide the information you need, when you need it.

We’re talking about spending $30 or so that might just save your life, and the lives of your family.

If you don’t have one, get one.

If you can’t find one, call me at the Daily Sun and I’ll help you find one.

It is that important.
