The right to petition

By Janet Jacobs
Corsicana Daily Sun

— Petitions have been filed with the White House asking that more than 50 states be allowed to leave the union and form their own governments. The petitions had different numbers of signers, with the most being from Texas, of course.

I’m not proud about that.

I like to think of myself as a Sam Houston Texan. I’m a Texan through-and-through, and proud of it, but I’m an American first. There are a lot of reasons, but primarily it’s because of what the United States of America has always stood for — freedom, justice, equality, and democracy.

It’s the difference between rooting for your mom in the sack race or your alma mater’s football team on TV. Love ‘em both, but mom gets top billing.

Anyway, a lot of fuss has been made about these petitions. Added up, the petition signers aren’t a significant number, but the bloggers say it’s vitally important because it indicates a dissatisfaction with the administration.

The popular vote, which was 48 percent to 50 percent, showed a dissatisfaction of nearly half the country with the administration. The rest is just sour grapes.

I read the 140 or so petitions currently awaiting signatures on the White House site. Among them were two of the exact same “let my redneck people go” requests from Missouri and Georgia. Apparently, they teach them how to use a computer but not how to read in MO and GA.

Also among them were two demands stating that people who sign the secessionist petitions should lose their citizenship and be deported. There were a lot of signatories on those, too.

I’d be more concerned if, a) the secessionist petitions hadn’t all been worded in the same grammatically incorrect way, which means there was a lone nasty little creep out there wanting to discard majority rule because he didn’t get what he wanted and 100,000 sheep-headed fools following him; and b) if filing a petition was difficult.

To illustrate how easy it is to file one of these on-line petitions and get idiots to sign it, the following is taken from an actual petition on the same site with the others. It was removed Wednesday morning, probably because of the profanity, but I copied out the words that could be interpeted as English and replaced the cursing with asterisks.

“legalize crystal ** weed” is the title. It goes on to say: “Soooo $toned ** man aw ** n** hella ** ** odd future man bro check this out my swag with the what whole 666 420 $$$$ holla holla get dolla swed cash ** marijuana cigarettes gansta gansta easy-E ** so baked off of the bobmarley ganja ** pure OG ** legalize crystal weed.”

It had 417 signatures.
