May 6

Navarro College will host a retirement reception from 5 to 7 p.m. at The Cook Center to honor three longtime employees of the college: Gena Hawkins, who managed the Corsicana campus computer center for more than 14 years; Anita Lane, who served as the coordinator and as an instructor of the Occupational Therapy Assistant program for 12 years; and Lewis Orr, who served as basketball coach since 1976. All are invited in wishing these three loyal employees a wonderful and rewarding retirement. An informational meeting regarding a proposed residential development in the Retreat area will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Corsicana Public Library Civic Room. Corsicana Preservation Foundation fund-raiser ball, benefiting the essence of Corsicana through preservation, will be held at the recently renovated Halbert Home, 1250 W. Third Ave. There will be cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and mint juleps. Dancing will be to the Corsicana Swing Orchestra. Tickets are $100 per person and are tax deductible. The 10th annual Corsicana AirSho will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Corsicana Municipal Airport, C. David Campbell Field, located off U.S. Highway 287, five miles southeast of Corsicana. The event, sponsored by the Coyote Squadron of the Commemorative Air Force, will have vintage World War II aircraft, formation flying by the Texas V-Tails, Falcon Flight and performances by Vietnam era FAC 02 and replica of a Japanese Zero. Airplane rides will be available. There will be remote control model aircraft flights, classic cars on display, vendor booths, plenty of food and drinks and activities for all ages. A free airplane ride drawing will be held after final flying performances (must be present to win). Admission will be $5 per person or $10 per carload. The Republican Party of Navarro County will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on the seventh floor of the Bank of America building, 100 N. Main St., Corsicana. District Judge John H. Jackson will be the featured speaker upon the subject of family law. Jackson will be declared an honorary Republican for that day, as an answer to bipartisanship. Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1009, Corsicana, will meet at 7 p.m. at Sirloin Stockade. Veterans who served on active duty (for other than training purposes) in the Republic of Vietnam between Feb. 28, 1961, and May 7, 1975, or in any duty location between Aug. 5, 1964, and May 7, 1975, are eligible for membership. Chasing the Cure will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at the Mildred High School track. An all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast will be served from 9 to 11 a.m. There will be fun and games. For $1 each you can buy a white balloon in memory or in honor of a survivor. Balloons will be released at noon. All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society. Hopewell Cemetery Association will meet at the cemetery for its annual meeting. The speaker and business meeting will begin at 11 a.m. with a covered dish lunch afterwards. A mission trip fund-raiser will be held at 7 p.m. at the YMCA-Rhoades Optimist Room to help with area youth going to help work in the Berryville, Ark., area which was hard hit by tornadoes last year. The mission trip will be taken in June. The fund-raiser will be a complete spaghetti dinner with live entertainment by the Douglas Family. There will also be door prizes and a baked goods auction. Advance tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children under age 11. Tickets at the door will be $15 for adults and $8 for children under age 11. The second chance prom, sponsored by Gowns Galore, will be held from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. at The Cook Center on the Navarro College campus, benefiting the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. The black-tie formal event will be for people who didn’t go their high school prom, for those who would like to go a prom again, and for those who just like to dress up and have fun. There will be a silent auction, raffle, 50/50 drawing, music from the ‘60s through the ‘90s, photographer, cash bar, and free hors d’oeuvres. Tickets will be $45 in advance or $50 at the door. Corsicana/Navarro County tire collection day will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Precinct 1 County Barn, located on State Highway 31 and 45th Street, across from Wal-Mart. Bring any and all of your tires (only tires) to the barn. No commercial tire dealers/haulers will be allowed to dispose of tires. Corsicana/Navarro County clean-up day will be held from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Corsicana Regional Landfill on Jester Road off East State Highway 31. Bring your junk and trash to the landfill. This can include: large appliances, furniture, entertainment equipment, agricultural pesticide containers (must be triple rinsed, punctured or crushed), daily household garbage, and brush. No tires will be accepted. You must be a Navarro County resident, and loads must be tarped and firmly secured to trucks and trailers. Assistance will be available to help unload. Volunteers will be available to take items to the landfill for elderly or disabled residents in the Corsicana area.
