Corsicana Preservation Foundation will celebrate “Historic Preservation Month” from 5 to 9 p.m. at Pocket Park in downtown Corsicana. Colorful oral histories of Rope Walker, Black Diamond and the Navarro Rifles will be told alongside Civil War reenactments and characters in period dress. Horse-drawn carriage and street car rides will be offered, and videos documenting Corsicana’s extraordinary past will be shown. Many downtown businesses and restaurants will be open late, and the movie “Bonnie and Clyde” will be shown beginning at 8:15 p.m. outside of Two Doors Down. Warehouse Living Arts Center Theatre’s Corsicana Children’s Company, 119 W. Sixth Ave., will present “Cinderella Wore Combat Boots,” adapted by Jerry Chase, at 7 p.m. May 14-16 and at 2:30 p.m. May 17. Directed by Frances Seidensticker Dodds, this updated version of the enduring children’s class will entertain audiences of all ages. Navarro County Relay for Life will be held from 7 p.m. May 15 to 7 a.m. May 16 at Community Park, next to the Corsicana YMCA. You are invited to join in to celebrate those who have won their battle against cancer, remember those who have lost their battle, and fight back so others never hear the words “You have cancer.” There will be continuous entertainment including popular and talented local individuals and groups. Chatfield Volunteer Fire Department will have its annual fish fry from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Chatfield-Tupelo Community Center. A dance will follow the fish fry. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. Come and enjoy good food, old-fashioned family fun and support your local volunteer firefighters.
Gloria La’Shawn Gee Choir Competition, sponsored by the United Christian Fellowship, will begin at 7 p.m. at Dawson Auditorium on the Navarro College campus. Winner will receive a Gloria La’Shawn Gee Scholarship at Navarro College. COPPS for Clean Air will have a fund-raiser from 5 to 7 p.m. at Richland-Chambers Reservoir at The Wilderness, Farm-to-Market Road 416, corner Shenandoah and Lincoln. There will be barbecue, music and community spirit for clean air. Donations will be accepted and are tax deductible. Bring a cooler with your beverage of choice and lawn chairs. Everything else will be provided. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held at the Southern Oaks Club House, located on FM 416.
Emhouse 4-H Club will sponsor a rabies clinic from 10 a.m. to noon at the Emhouse Community Center with Dr. Beck as attending veterinarian. This will be a fund-raiser for the club.

Emhouse Volunteer Fire Department will have a fish fry fund-raiser from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Menu will be catfish, french fries, hush puppies, coleslaw and drink. Cost will be $8 for adults and $5 for children. There will also be silent auction, bounce houses for the kids, and PHI helicopters will be on site from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
“We the People of Texas,” a newly-formed organization of concerned citizens, parents and grandparents interested in becoming more actively involved with local, county, state and federal governments. Hopewell Cemetery Association will hold its annual meeting at the cemetery. It will begin at 11 a.m. and end with a covered dish lunch and fellowship. Rice One-Act Play will present “The Miser” at 7 p.m. at the Rice High School stage. The public is invited and admission will be free; however, donations are appreciated and will be used to start a scholarship fund for deserving students to attend theatre camp. Students will be performing the play as well as prose and poetry selections from this year.

VOICE will offer the Texas Youth Tobacco Awareness Program, a state-approved program for minors charged with attempted purchase, consumption, or possession of tobacco and is designed to the mandates of Texas law. VOICE staff is certified to facilitate this program. The class will be an eight-hour program divided into four two-hour sessions. This session will be from 4 to 6 p.m. May 19, 21, 26 and 28. Participants are required to attend all sessions. Classes are $100 (cash only) for all sessions. All participants must pre-register. Application deadline for the Corsicana Board Diversity Program, sponsored by VOICE and Corsicana/Navarro County Chamber of Commerce, is May 22. Sessions will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. May 28 and June 11, 18 and 25. Cost will be free, but space is limited and all attendees must be pre-registered. The Board Diversity Program is to create opportunity, build leadership, and accelerate the involvement of ethnic minorities on the board of directors and committees of nonprofit agencies in Navarro County. A Memorial Day ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. at the War Memorial on the northwest corner of the Navarro County Courthouse lawn. There will be an unveiling of the monument in memory of William O’Brien, who was killed in action March 15, 2008, in Iraq. Everyone is invited to come to this ceremony.
A Memorial Day service will be held at 1 p.m. at the gazebo at Woodland Memorial Park, located on Roane Road, sponsored by Single Believers Ministries. Co. C 124th Cavalry Tommy Hall Jr. as keynote speaker, a song by Curtis Sparks, prayer by Pastor Dairy Johnson, a 21 gun salute by Navarro County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Les Cotten, and “Taps” by Les Grayson.

Mosaic, a local non-profit agency which serves and supports individuals with developmental disabilities, will have its first spring sports spectacular from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fullerton-Garitty Park. This will be open to the public and a fun event for the whole family. This will include sports related and art related carnival type games and activities, a food booth and a silent auction. All funds will benefit the local agency in supporting the individuals that are served. Volunteers, sponsors, underwriters and general donations are needed. The annual Dawg Daze of Summer Sooner Chili Cook-off will be held at Gander Mountain, benefiting the Humane Society of Navarro County. A pet contest will be held at 10 a.m. with the following categories: smallest, biggest, best dressed, best trick and owner/pet look alike. Cost is $5 per pet to enter one or all categories. There will be a special appearance by Bill McFarlin and Star, his Brittany from CBS’ reality hit “Greatest American Dog.” Demonstrations will be given by Star and her companions Maggie and Lucille. The chili cook-off will include the following with entry fees and turn-in times: 50/50 beans, $10, noon; junior chili (ages 8 to 17), $5, 1 p.m. (chili grind only); CASI chili, $20, 1 p.m. (chili grind only).
