June 14
A community-wide flag retirement ceremony will take place at 5:30 p.m. at Resthaven Memorial Park. Flags may be brought to the ceremony, or they may be dropped off at several locations, including Resthaven Memorial Park, any V.F.W. post, or any American Legion post. Pickup service is also available for anyone with a flag that needs to be retired by calling (903) 872-2191.

The Legionnaires’ monthly meeting will be held at 1 p.m. at the American Legion Post 22, 632 N. Beaton St. To attend this meeting, membership must be current. For more information, call after 2 p.m. to (903) 874-3938.

Navarro County Genealogical Society will meet at 10 a.m. in the Corsicana Public Library Civic Room, 100 N. 12th St. The program will be presented by Norman Stubbs, who will present a first-person presentation of James Polk and his experiences as a member of the Navarro Rifles during the 1860s. Members are urged to attend and bring a friend. New members are always accepted, and the public is always welcome.

Rice Volunteer Fire Department will hold a benefit pancake breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m. at the Rice High School cafeteria. Price for the meal will be $5 for adults and $2.50 for children 10 and under. The meal will feature pancakes and sausage, cooked and served by local firefighters. Juice and coffee will also be provided. There will be door prizes and a raffle featuring a Nintendo Wii System and games, four ATV tires, chain saw, one hour full-body massage with facial, 42-inch Hampton Bay ceiling fan, and two tickets to the Texas Pop Festival starring Johnny Winter. Proceeds from the breakfast will be used to purchase protective gear and equipment for the Rice VFD. Donations are tax deductible.

A bake sale for the benefit of Bruce Holman will be held beginning at 8 a.m. at 217 Garitty Street in Frost (next to the Frost gas station). Holman was injured in an accident April 26. He lost his right leg due to the accident. Proceeds from the bake sale will go into the account the Frost VFD has set up at the Community National Bank and Trust to assist Holman and his family.

Providence Cemetery Association will meet at 11 a.m. with a covered dish lunch and a business meeting to follow. The speaker will be Johnny Singleton. If you cannot attend, donations may be made to Providence Cemetery Association, in care of Patty Toland, 2000 Farm-to-Market Road 637, Corsicana, TX 75109.

The Coyote Squadron of the Commemorative Air Force will hold its monthly meeting in the Tucker Hardgrave Memorial Hangar at the Corsicana Municipal Airport, C. David Campbell Field. To be discussed will be the recent 10th annual AirSho and making plans for the 11th. Staff will meet at 10 a.m. Squadron meeting will be at 10:30 a.m. If you are interested in joining the Coyote Squadron, visit the meeting which will include lunch. The Republican Party of Navarro County will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on the seventh floor of the Bank of America building, 100 N. Main St. A report of the 2008 Republican Party of Texas state convention held in Houston will be presented. All registered voters are welcome to attend. The annual Miss Juneteenth Pageant, hosted by Jackson Ex-Students Association, will be held at 7 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center. This is a change from the previous location given.

June 21
Powell Volunteer Fire Department will have a fish fry fund-raiser beginning at 5 p.m. at the fire station. Cost of the meal will be $8 per plate. Menu will be fish, french fries, beans, coleslaw, bread, tea and coffee. Funds raised will go towards new fire equipment that is needed.

The annual Juneteenth parade will be held at 10 a.m. with the line-up beginning at 9 a.m. at Carroll Elementary School. The program will be held at 11 a.m. at Bunert Park.

The Freedom Flag Project will hold a fund-raiser to assist with funding the numerous events held at Bunert Park in honor of local heroes. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., a barbecue plate dinner and bake sale will be held at the City of Corsicana Annex Building, located on Collin Street, behind the Corsicana Public Library. Navarro County Reach to Recovery will have a breast cancer health fair from 9 a.m. to noon in Classroom 2 of Navarro Regional Hospital. This will be the last health fair for 2008. If you are a breast cancer patient, you are encouraged to attend and receive vital information. Reach to Recovery, a service offered free of charge and a division of the American Cancer Society, offers support by breast cancer survivors, literature, temporary breast prosthesis, wigs, and other support. VOICE will offer the Texas Youth Tobacco Awareness Program, a state-approved program for minors charged with attempted purchase, consumption, or possession of tobacco and is designed to the mandates of Texas law. VOICE staff is certified to facilitate this program. The class will be an eight-hour program divided into four two-hour sessions. There will be a choice of morning or afternoon sessions — from 9 to 11 a.m. or from 3 to 5 p.m. July 15, 17, 22 and 24. Classes are $80 (cash only) for all sessions. A benefit for Bruce Holman will be held beginning at 5 p.m. at Frost City Park. There will be hamburgers, hot dogs, silent and live auction, live music featuring JJ Bratcher. Holman, a former resident of Frost and son of William and Linda Meskiman, was severely injured in an accident April 26. He will have many months of physical therapy. You are invited to come support Holman and his family. Also, a bank account has been established for donations at Community National Bank and Trust. Donations may be made to “Frost Volunteer Fire Department for Bruce Holman” at the Frost, Streetman and Fairfield bank locations, or at either of the two Corsicana locations.

Warehouse Living Arts Center’s Corsicana Children’s Company’s ninth annual theatre camp will be held. “Act and Seek” for kindergarten through second grade will meet from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at a cost of $55. “Imagination Station” for third through fifth grades will meet from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at a cost of $58.50. Students will need a sack lunch. “Innovative Imagineers” for sixth through eighth grades and from ninth to 12th grades will meet from 2 to 5 p.m. at a cost of $65. Cost for each class will include a T-shirt and a snack. Season-ticket holders and multiple family registrations will get a 10-percent discount.
