Lady Jags top Wortham 61-59

By Nate Woodall

HUBBARD The game matched up to all the hype surrounding it, but it was Hubbard that came out on top 61-59 Friday night over Wortham.

The game started out fast paced, then it was Kara Jantzen of Wortham made her first three-pointer of the night to tie the game at 15 apiece. With Wortham down by two in the first quarter, it was Sarah Owens that made a jump shot and drew the foul after making a rebound to make the score 20-17 in Wortham’s favor.

The first quarter would end with Wortham on top 20-19. Africa Lang began the quarter by converting both of her free throw shots to put Hubbard up 21-20. After Lang’s two points, Wortham went on to score four straight points to make it’s lead 24-20. Iesha Simmons made a three-pointer that would spark a 10-4 run by Hubbard.

Jantzen would answer Simmons with a three-pointer of her own, and one free throw to bring her team to within one point. Hubbard would answer that with a 6-2 run that put Hubbard up 37-32 at the end of the half. Wortham would come out of the second half firing at all cylinders as the Lady Bulldogs went on a 10-2 run to make the score 41-39.

At the end of the quarter Iesha Simmons would score four more poins.

Hubbard added two more points making the score 48-46 points going into the fourth and final quarter.

This is where the game got really good. The quarter started off with Kelli Ann Spencer making a jump shot after Cara Weempe made a heroic dive into the stands to keep the ball in play making the score 52-50 in Wortham’s favor. After another free throw from Wortham Sara Fletcher made a jumper to make the score 53-52 Wotham still leading. Kara Jantzen would make both of her free throws after a Hubbard technical foul. Following those two free throws, Sarah Owens made a jump shot to put Wortham up 58-53 when Hubbard called a timeout.

Simmons proved to be Hubbard’s clutch player as she made a basket, drew the foul, and made that foul shot bringing Hubbard within two points.

After a Hubbard steal, Simmons would make another shot to tie the game at 58 apiece with 1:30 left in the game.

With :35 left in the game Alexis Griffin made a wide open lay-up to put Hubbard up 60-58. After being fouled,

Chey Anne Bates would make her first free throw, but couldn’t get the last one to fall in. Hubbard would get the rebound and Wortham made the mistake of fouling Simmons.

Simmons would go 1-2 on her free throws to put Hubbard up 61-59 and seal the game.
