No ‘puff’ allowed: Juniors top Seniors in Powder Puff football game

By Michael Adams

There was very little “puff” on display Monday at Tiger Stadium.

During the annual Powder Puff football game between the Junior and Senior girls, the ladies showed they had just as much toughness as their male counterparts.

The Juniors used the heroics of quarterback Audrey Cain, who ran in her second touchdown of the night from the 23-yard line to put the Juniors ahead 21-14 with 1:52 left in the game.

With the Seniors threatening late in the game, the Juniors defense kept the Seniors out of the end zone to secure the win.

“The option was our bread and butter,” Juniors coach Barry Hughey said. “We were blessed with a lot of speed.”

Cain scored the game’s first touchdown in the first half to put the Juniors up 7-0.

The Seniors showed they weren’t going down without a fight and tied the game with nine seconds left in the first half after Ashley Ovalle ran in a touchdown from the six-yard-line.

In the second half, the Juniors proved this was going to be their night.

After a trade in possessions through the first 18 minutes of the half, Erica Wolver ran in a touchdown from the 12-yard-line with 11:20 left in the game to put the Juniors back on top.

Ovalle put the life back in the Seniors sideline just four minutes later as she tied the game wit a 2-yard touchdown, which she set up with a 30-yard run on the team’s first possession.

After Cain’s heroics, the Seniors had one more chance to tie the game, but a relentless Juniors defense put a stop to any chance of a comeback.

The Juniors were coached by Tigers football players Drew Borsellino, Scotty Bryant, Kyle Hand, Kendall Jessie, Matt Rhone and Hughey.

Omarius Hines joined Hill Crawford, Brison Manuere, Tim Smith, Hill Crawford, Kyle Richardson and Heath Hayes to coach the Seniors.

Tigers coach Dave Henigan and his staff worked as officials and were kept very busy by the physical play of the girls.
