Layfield advances to UIL tennis semifinals

Kerens’ Alex Layfield waited six hours, but finally got to play.
Layfield advanced to the semifinals of the UIL State Tennis Tournament in Austin, defeating Taylor Lloyd, of Tuscola Jim Ned, 6-2, 7-5 in the quarterfinals.
The sophomore will play Franklin’s Austin Klores in the semifinals today. Klores defeated his quarterfinal opponent Daniel Huggins, of Centerville, 6-0, 6-0.
Persistent rains delayed the matches more than six hours, causing meet officials to push the semifinals and finals rounds back to today beginning at 8 a.m. for singles and 9:30 a.m. in doubles.
Frost’s Travis Cassady and Haley Cagle lost their quarterfinal match.
Cagle and Cassady had a hard fought battle, losing in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 to Sabinal’s Ben Hawkes and Brittney Horton.
