Kerens’ Alex Layfield run at a state championship ended Tuesday.
Layfield lost his semifinal match against Franklin’s Austin Klores 6-1, 6-1.
Klores won a record-tying fourth straight boys singles title as he defeated Hunter Lloyd of Tuscola Jim Ned in the Class 2A championship match.
Klores defeated Lloyd 6-2, 6-4 to become the fourth boys tennis player ever to win titles in four years of competition. The last was Colter Williams of Rotan in 2001-2004.
Layfield was the District 16-1A and Class 2A, Region II champion and was playing in his second straight UIL State Tennis Tournament.
In other action at the state tournament, Ben Spencer and Julian Bexley of Lexington are the latest in their families to find success on the tennis court as they combined to win the Class 2A boys doubles title.
Spencer is the son of coach Rick Spencer and Bexley’s father, Keith Bexley, was the first player to reach state after Rick Spencer returned to his alma mater as coach.
