The Hubbard Lady Jags hope they can hit a bull’s-eye this weekend in the Class 1A, Region II quarterfinals.
Hubbard will take on the defending Class 1A state champions Bosqueville in a three game series beginning Friday.
Game One is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday at Waco-Reicher Field with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday beginning at 6:30 p.m.
“The Bosqueville coach and I are pretty good friends and he knows they have a target on their backs being the defending state champs and the No. 1 team,” Hubbard coach Mike Sauke said. “Our girls have nothing to lose and their dedication gives me hope they can pull off the upset.”
The Lady Jags, the District 16-1A champions, are in an uphill battle.
Bosqueville defeated district rival Dawson 26-0 and 19-1 last week in the area playoffs.
Sauke said this is a different team than he had last season, but they are preparing for their tough challenge like any other game.
“These girls have really come together as a team,” he said. “There isn’t a bunch of individuals out there. They know what their role is and what they are supposed to do.
“Hard work is not a problem.”
Sauke said when the season started he scheduled three, 7 a.m. practices to test the dedication of his team.
“All of them showed up,” he said. “That’s the wonderful thing about this team. They all want to be out there. They aren’t afraid to get dirty and they all play together.
“That’s why I think we won’t have a problem this week.”
