Wortham advances with 5-2 win over Albany

Late inning production and solid pitching carried the Wortham Bulldogs to a win in the Class 1A, Region II area playoff Friday at Granbury.

The Bulldogs advance a round deeper in the postseason after getting past Albany 5-2.

Jody Spain picked up the victory, pitching all seven innings and striking out 11 Lion’s batters.

Brandon Lansford lead the way at the plate for Wortham, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Jake Jones also went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs respectively.

After four innings of scoreless baseball, the Bulldogs put themselves ahead of the Lions with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Albany cut its deficit to one run as they drove in two scores in the top of the sixth.

Wortham pushed its advantage back to three runs in the bottom of the inning with two runs.

The Bulldogs will face the winner of Bosqueville/Goldwaite in the regional quarterfinals in Gatesvielle at a date to be determined.
