The Golden Circle was well represented, having nine athletes recognized in the Texas Sports Writers Association All-State Baseball teams released Wednesday.
In Class 2A, Mildred had three players named with senior hurler Cory Roper named as a first team pitcher, Jake Shimonek a third team selection at third base and Trevor Burnett named as an honorable mention at catcher.
Blooming Grove’s ace Scott Ackley was named as a second team pitcher in Class 2A.
Dawson was heavily recognized in Class 1A, with four players making a TSWA team.
Bubba Medrano was the lone first team candidate for Dawson, tying with Bosqueville’s Cody Feight for the shortstop position honors.
Seniors Dylan Nesmith and Jerome Tennison were each named to the second team, with junior Zack Edwards making the third team at pitcher.
Wortham’s Jody Spain was selected to two teams, making the first team as a second baseman and third team at pitcher.
Spain, also a Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association first team selection, said each of these end of the year awards he has earned are meaningful to him.
“I always like to hear that I was given an award,” he said. “I am happy that I made two teams and especially the first team at second base because I will be playing in the infield at (Hill) College next season.”
