MORGAN: With a great golf game and attractive gal, Romo a target

By Ron Morgan

Boy, I wish I’d been in Washington, D.C. this week. No, I didn’t want to wade into socialized medicine or cap and trade. And, no, I didn’t want to catch a glimpse of Nancy Pelosi or Barney Frank. I didn’t even want to try to catch a little of that stimulus money they were throwing around.

Tony Romo and Tiger Woods went head to head in the pro-am for Tiger’s golf tournament. From what I hear, Tiger gave Romo two shots and picked up a little coffee money. Tony needs to work on that putter.

You know as well as I that the local critics will be buzzing. The blogs, frogs, twitters and corn fritters will want Tony’s hide because he played golf when he could have been in his backyard throwing a football through an old tire hanging from a tree. What’s he thinking? Doesn’t he want to get better?

We all know for a fact that Roger the Dodger and Troy never spent time on the golf course. They both got up at 5 a.m., did a quick five-mile jog, stopped by Tom/Jimmy’s office for a quick devotional, recited the playbook backwards, threw passes to reserve wideouts blindfolded, bench pressed a Volkswagen with each hand, watched game film with one eye while reading scouting reports with the other then got ready to really work out.

Terrance Newman plays golf right around the corner at the Trophy Club Country Club. Nobody says anything about that. About a month ago at a long drive competition, new offensive lineman Ryan Gibbons hit a drive 381 yards to beat defending celebrity champ Matt McBriar by six yards. Who gets upset seeing them pick up a Titleist?

Another complaint about Tony is in the girlfriend department. Tons of callers to radio talk shows think that she may consume more of Tony’s time than golf does. Instead of looking into Jessica’s baby blues he should be staring into the eyes of Roy Williams running a skinny post.

I think the biggest problem is Tony’s success off the field. If he was shooting in the upper 90s or dating some ugly woman, no one would notice. If Tony only needed as many mulligans as I do, people would assume that he just plays to unwind. The fact that he plays at a very high level tells people that he spends too much time working on his game and not the one that he gets paid millions for.

And, if Miss Simpson didn’t look so darned good in her little pink Tony Romo jersey and Daisy Duke shorts, then people wouldn’t begrudge the always smiling QB a love interest. Who can tell me whether Jason Witten is even married? What does Marion Barber’s girlfriend look like? If Jessica just looked like Jerry Jones or Frank Means in drag, Tony wouldn’t catch any grief.

All of the Cowboys now and over the past 50 years have had interests other than football. It’s just that Romo’s outside interests draw a lot of attention. When you can only get two shots from Tiger Woods and have Jessica Simpson as a forecaddie, you get noticed.

Personally, I think that his extremely good golf game is a credit to his athletic ability and his competitive nature. And, Jessica? At least we know he’s not staying out till all hours at a singles bar or burning up the server at Eharmony.com.

Outside of the Smithsonian, I can’t think of much reason for me to go to D.C. I’m afraid to get my wallet any closer to Congress than it already is. However, to see Tony and the Tiger tee it up would be: “Greeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaat."
