If it keeps winning, Corsicana’s 12-under All-Star team is going to need a travel agent.
The Dawgs beat the Cleburne Sheet Metal Reds, 7-5, in the championship game to earn a berth in the South Zone Bronco tournament in Tampa, Fla.
“They’re really excited,” assistant coach Whoa Dill said. “Some these guys have never been out of the state of Texas. It was a good game.”
The Dawgs were crowned West Region Champions, but it almost didn’t happen.
The Reds beat Corsicana 12-8 in the first championship game, but it was only the Dawgs’ first loss of the tournament.
In the second and deciding game, Cleburne jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
That’s when coaches Frank Marx, Whoa Dill and Tracy Wood decided to meet with the team.
“They were down a litle bit,” Dill said.
Apparently the pep talk worked.
Hunter Denbow hit a sacrifice fly to score Holden Grounds in the bottom of the first, then the Dawgs scored two runs in the third and followed with four in the fourth inning, including a two-run double by Nic Shimonek.
Heath Donica pitched a complete game giving up five runs on six hits while striking out four batters.
If the Dawgs win the Florida tournament, they’ll move onto nationals in California.
The team is meeting today at 2 p.m. at Beebe Field to figure the logistics of the trip.
