Volleyball teams from as far as South Texas are invading the K. and Ida Wolens Special Events Center this week.
The arena is hosting the Charles Jolly Texas All-Star Volleyball Team Camp and includes teams from Bastrop, Cayuga, Athens, Wylie, Saginaw, Florence and Princeton. Individual players from Lone Oak, Corsicana and several other schools were among the 90 campers.
Lady Tigers freshmen Courtney Dawson was the lone Corsicana player at the camp. She said the location is why she attended.
“I really didn’t want to go too far way from home,” she said. “Hopefully, I will learn some new skills and get better at volleyball.”
Cayuga coach Stephen Drinkard brought his entire team to the camp to get a head start on the season.
“We are playing 15 games before the season even starts by participating in this camp,” he said. “They get a chance to work on timing and chemistry with each other here.”
The camp was instructed by Navarro volleyball coach Wally Brooks and current and former Navarro players, along with coaches from the teams participating in the camp.
The camp is broken into two sessions with drills and fundamental stations in the morning and head-to-head competition in the afternoon.
