Corsicana at West Mesquite
Todd Wills
7:30 p.m. , Thursday
At Mesquite Memorial Stadium
RECORDS: Season opener for both teams; Corsicana was 5-5 in 2007, West Mesquite was 10-4.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Corsicana: QB Cameron Young, RB JaVonti Hines, WR Matt Ward, OL Tyler Wigfall, DL Kevin Harris, LB Cody Evans, DB Tremaigne Dickson. West Mesquite: RB Justin Limbrick, WR Skyler Scott, WR Gary Owens, LB Brian Crawford, K Justin Stout.
Fast Fact: The Tigers and Wranglers have split close games to open the season the last two years, with Corsicana winning 41-34 in 2007 and West Mesquite winning 34-31 in OT in ‘06.
UPDATE: Tigers quarterback Cameron Young will get his first start at the varsity level after 30 of them at sub-varsity level. If the Tigers’ scrimmage last Friday against West Mesquite was any indication, the Young--to-Ward combination could be a potent one. Ward caught three long passes in the scrimmage, including one for a touchdown...Standout Tigers LB Cody Evans will be joined in the staring lineup by two sophomores, Ike Hunter and Martin Davis...West Mesquite had its best season in school history last year, reaching the Class 4A Division II state quarterfinals, where the Wranglers lost to Highland Park, 49-6...The Wranglers have the difficult task of replacing quarterback Kendall Thomas. The choice looks to be sophomore Trevone Boykin, who transferred from Mesquite, where he would be playing behind standout Skeeters QB Luke Halpin.
