Openers going to internet

Todd Wills

If you want to listen to the Tigers and Navarro season openers, you’ll have to break out your computer and make sure you have an internet connection.

Because of contractual obligations and conflicts in scheduling, neither of the local teams’ openers will air on KAND-AM 1340.

The Tigers’ road game at West Mesquite will be streamed on the radio station’s website — www.kandradio.com — beginning at 7 p.m. with the pre-game show. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.

The Tigers have been shifted to the internet because KAND is carrying the Cowboys’ final pre-season game against Minnesota Thursday night. Station owner David Yates said that KAND is contractually required to air all Cowboys games.

Navarro’s road opener at Coffeyville, Kan. at 7 p.m. Saturday will also be streamed online because the station is carrying Texas A&M football games this year.

“We secured the rights to stream (Navarro’s) broadcast on www.kandradio.com,” Yates said.

Yates said that the station will broadcast the feed from the Coffeyville radio station.

Corsicana athletic director Joe Young said Tuesday he understands KAND’s situation.

“I understand the obligation to the Cowboys,” Young said. “We are sure they will do their best to get the game on the internet and on TV. We are very appreciative of KAND.”

Listeners who want to tune into the broadcast of the Tigers’ opener in Mesquite on TV can punch their remote control on Ch. 3 on Northland Cable or punch up the webcast.
