Young impressive in first game at QB

Todd Wills

Cameron Young had 30 games in his high school career entering Thursday night.

The way he played in a 14-3 victory over West Mesquite, you would have thought they were all varsity games.

Yes, that Tiger quarterback wearing No. 6 on Thursday night was playing in his FIRST varsity game. He made decisions of a veteran starter, checking down when he had to. And recognizing that receivers were getting wide open in the middle of the field, something that head coach Dave Henigan and offensive coordinator Shawn Purcell saw while watching film the last few weeks.

"I've started a lot of games," Young said. "I was able to adjust to the speed of the game the best I could."

Young completed passes to seven different receivers. He only threw 13 passes, but all nine completions were important. Young threw the ball to the right receiver pretty much every time.

"He's a smart kid," Henigan said. "He's big, he's accurate. He's a competitor. He's not going to let people rattle him."

Young undoubtedly established himself as the leader of the offense Thursday. He displayed that in the fourth quarter when he was hit late out of bounds. Young jumped up and shoved the West Mesquite defender, drawing an unsportsmanlike penalty that the coaches would probably rather not have.

But it was also a moment where Young made a statement that no one is going to push around the Tigers.
