GC Football: District 6-2A DII Team: Mildred, BG, Rice reap honors

Corsicana — Mildred had the Newcomer of the Year and placed seven players at nine positions on the first teams of the District 6-2A DII all district football team while Blooming Grove placed six first-teamers and 13 overall on the first and second teams, and Rice saw Chris Atchley make the first team offense as a fullback and first team defense as a cornerback.

Mildred’s Draylon Sterling pulled off the same double, making the first team as a tailback on offense and the first-team defense as a safety, and Mildred’s Devin O’Sullivan, who set the Texas career-record for extra points, was the co-kicker on the first team along with Blooming Grove’s Tyler Ellis, and O’Sullivan also made the first team as an outside linebacker.

Mildred’s Russell Holden, a sophomore wide receiver, was the district’s Newcomer of the Year, and the Eagles landed four players on the first team offense — offensive lineman Keanu Fathal, receiver Mikey Muncey and Sterling and O’Sullivan — and five on defense. Sterling and O’Sullivan were joined by sophomore defensive tackle Mario Villarreal, and seniors Joe Carrizales (DE) and Trent Cecil (CB).

Mildred had three players make the second team: Sophomore Will Burnham (safety), Cecil (WR) and Muncey.

The Lions had seven players named to the second team: Tyler Ellis (QB), Travis Whiteside (RB), Dalton Blake (WR), Dustin Raxter (OL), Rickey Linton (DT), Jody Kirby (LB) and Dalton Thornton (DE).
